Is Israel disintegrating from within? In 1890, the Austrian Jewish writer Nathan Birnbaum published an article in the magazine “Self-Emancipation,” using a word that was new to his readers at that time[1], but it was not an arbitrary word, as only seven years had passed until this term was crystallized in Basel. In Switzerland in 1897 by another Austrian Jew, “Theodor Herzl,” who used the word “Zionism,” coined by “Nathan,” to hold the first Zionist Congress one year after the publication of his book, “The Jewish State.” He called for the migration of Jews to Palestine and the establishment of the Land of Israel, which would solve the problem of Jewish minorities in the diaspora. What we know well today is that this moment was the beginning of the Zionist settlement project, which ended with the State of Israel established on the ruins of Palestine, but what many also do not know is that the same moment was the one that launched the story of the internal Jewish conflict between religious Jews and Zionism, before the Nakba, and before the Jewish migrations to Palestine, before the Balfour Declaration, and before Balfour even knew that he would promise the Jews something in a certain land. According to Younis Abdel Hamid, a researcher in history at the Islamic University of Gaza[3], many religious Jews rejected Zionist thought from its beginning, and even fought it and considered it harmful to their interests in the world. Their leaders realized that Zionism was a secular movement, not only because of the secularism of its founders, but also because of its opposition to it. Explicit because of their belief in the Kingdom of Israel that the expected “Mashiach” will establish for them. The religious character with which Zionism characterized its movement did not apply to religious Jews, as the writer Muhammad Amara[4] - a researcher in religions and the Arab-Israeli conflict - says, as he tells us that the derivation of “Zionism” came from exploiting the feelings of the Jews and their longing for the mountain. “Zion” is sacred to them, and this clashes with a well-established Jewish rule for them - also - which is that the Land of Israel was granted to them by God at the hands of the Awaited Messiah, and that every human attempt to establish a Jewish state is nothing but blasphemy and an aberration from the known traditional Jewish way and a betrayal of the meaning of The Promise.
