Developing intercultural competences - quo vadis? This was the topic of a Symposium on international #teaching initiatives in international management focusing on best practices for developing #intercultural #competences and the need for future research in this area at the #EURAM Conference in Bath. The symposium was organized by Maike Andresen, Jaime Bonache & Mila Lazarova. Various training approaches to develop and improve intercultural competence were presented by Marjaana Gunkel, Fabian Homberg, Iveta Ludviga, Sarah Quataert and myself. We owe special thanks to our great discussant Margaret Shaffer who greatly enriched our discussions and insights and, of course, a big thank you to our organizers for creating such an insightful session and for inviting us! It was a great pleasure to present the Serious Game Moving Tomorrow developed by Tobias Schumacher and myself for #ESCP Business School as one alternative to develop intercultural competence. To date it has been taught at many universities and companies on various continents with a great feedback from partcipants. It contributes to developing insights in intercultural management, diversity & inclusion and International Human Resource Management. Further our research has shown that -Serious Game centered education significantly and positively relates to the development of cultural intelligence including all sub-dimensions. -It works for all types of learners: Divergent, accommodative, and assimilative learners all reported significant improvements in tehir cultural intelligence. REALIST – a ‘realist’, I am! It took me a bit of time – 10 weeks of lectures, tons of reading (more than what I have read in the past few years combined) & of cause having to write a few essays (not voluntary – but mandatory), analysing different perspectives from class  discussions, I confidently can claim to be a REALIST (from an International Relations perspective). I guess if “REALISM” (International Relations - IR) was a football team, it will have the greats of Thucydides, Thomas Hobbes, Hans Morgenthau, John Mearsheimer, etc. as legendary managers (coaches)!   To be honest, 10+ weeks back, when I started my second Masters, after more than 16 years since my last & experiencing University life again, I really felt ‘out of place’ – the old bird amongst eagles (scholars) & bright minds across ASEAN & some international countries. There were times I felt “totally out of place”, struggled to understand (the theories) & literally in Singlish (Singapore English) terms - “catch no ball”. I felt like quitting or at least console myself that I tried – but I guess, it’s not in my DNA.   If I could candidly rephrase IR’s ‘balance of power’ concept to ‘balance of lectures’ - my initial 2 modules, IR (very theoretical) & Singapore Foreign Policy (very practical) is a perfect example; In addition, what I lacked in ‘theory’ (my weakness), I made up for in “life experiences” (my strength) & I guess the 2 modules and a change in my approach eventually became a perfect ‘YIN & YANG’ experience!  3 more weeks – 2 down & 7 more to go. Intercultural fluency is much more than being able to order a drink in another language. Today’s world is smaller than ever. As global mobility increases, it’s essential that students and workers develop cultural competency and global citizenship to successfully communicate and collaborate with people from differing cultural backgrounds.
