Chinese data protection compliance is complex and nuanced, but as I learned from our many conversations, David Tang (INPLP | International Network of Privacy Law Professionals colleague and friend) has a way of breaking it down and making it accessible to non-native Chinese and non-privacy professionals. Here is his article with an overview of the data protection landscape and important recent policy changes. https://lnkd.in/eXkpkbNV #dataprivacy #dataprotection #privacyFOMO #inplp

Recently, Lanx Goh (CAIDG Research Affiliate and Senior Director, Global Head of Privacy Prudential PLC) co-authored a chapter on Singapore Privacy Law in a book titled '𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐰 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚’ edited by Adrian Mak, Ching Him Ho, and Anselmo Reyes. This comprehensive book covers 16 Asian jurisdictions, each at different stages of developing data protection regulatory systems. It offers an in-depth, cross-jurisdictional commentary on Asian privacy and personal data protection, with a special focus on private international law issues. Bringing together an international team of contributors, the book reflects on data privacy frameworks across Asia, exploring topics such as extraterritorial effects, conflicts with other states' laws, and potential improvements to existing systems. Beyond its significant contribution to comparative private conflict of laws literature, the book also contemplates the future trajectories of Asian privacy laws. It assesses how Asian regimes may need to integrate with evolving privacy initiatives in the EU, USA, and China, and whether they are equipped to handle the challenges of future technological developments in data collection and cross-border data transfer, especially concerning major corporations like Meta, Google, Amazon, Alibaba, and Tencent. This wide-ranging and forward-thinking resource provides practitioners and researchers with a detailed account of data privacy and personal data protection laws in Asia and their cross-border implications, both current and future. Data plays a critical role in today's business landscape. Currently in Vietnam, there is a decree for personal data protection and other developing laws, but nonpersonal data laws have been governed by a variety of fragmented legislation. A comprehensive legal framework will be necessary moving forward, which the government has been working to draft. The Law on Data draft, if adopted, aims to strengthen data protection and privacy standards while encouraging the growth of products and services. It will become the primary legal instrument governing data within Vietnam by superseding other laws.
