The ICARUS consortium, led by Deimos, has secured €15 million in EU funding to develop an inflatable heat shield for recovering rocket stages and preparing for #Mars missions. 🚀👩🚀 This project includes ATMOS Space Cargo German Aerospace Center (DLR) CIRA Pangaia Grado Zero Srl ONERA - The French Aerospace Lab, Politecnico di Torino HDES Service & Engineering BV and Demcon high-tech systems as partners. Kicking off in June 2024, ICARUS will proceed through mission design, flight tests and post-flight analysis over the next four years. Testing the inflatable heat shield is planned for 2028. X-66 Soars: NASA’s Sustainable Flight Takes Off! Get ready for greener skies! NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s experimental X-66 aircraft, designed for sustainable aviation, just achieved a major milestone. Wind tunnel tests have successfully verified the X-66’s revolutionary transonic truss-braced wing design! This innovative design promises single-aisle airliners with over 30% better fuel efficiency, paving the way for more environmentally friendly air travel. This incredible achievement is a testament to the successful partnership between NASA and Boeing subsidiary, Aurora Flight Sciences, as part of the Sustainable Flight Demonstrator (SFD) project. Ground and flight testing of the X-66, using a modified MD-90 aircraft, is set to begin in 2028. This is a huge step towards a more sustainable future for aviation! The X-66’s successful wind tunnel tests mark a significant leap forward in sustainable aviation. 🚀Space sustainability = game changer 😄Join us in Milan to learn about challenges, opportunities, initiatives and capacity building in space sustainability. Or submit an abstract today! 💡The main objectives of the Workshop are to: -Raise awareness of the various initiative to measure and predict the impact of space activities (spacecraft manufacturing, launch and re-entry) on the Earth environment; -Showcase changes in space engineering practices to reduce the carbon footprint of the space sector overall, with technical innovations for greener technologies, financing of innovations and regulatory incentives for their adoption; -Capacity building activities on space sustainability, especially from the perspective of new space faring countries and non-space faring countries keen to adopt best practices and preserve the sustainability of the space environment; -Share challenges and success stories to de-orbit spacecraft responsibly, such as technical de-orbiting methods and tools, to discuss what methods are the most effective; -Showcase success stories of technical coordination for space activities that have been impacting each other, such as astronomical observations and satellites operations, or activities of various nature on the surface of the Moon and Mars -Share information on innovative space-based applications and services contributing to environmental sustainability on Earth.

 Space as a safe environment, open to exploration, peaceful use and international cooperation by current and future generations, this is the concept at the heart of IAC2024, dedicated to the theme “Responsible Space for Sustainability”, organised by the International Astronautical Federation and hosted in Italy by the AIDAA - The Italian Association of Aeronautics and Astronautics , with the support of #Leonardo and the Italian Space Agency (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana).   💡 ASI, in collaboration with AIDAA and Leonardo, has launched a Call for Ideas to invite third and fourth years of Italian secondary schools, in Italy and abroad, to reflect on the theme of sustainability and to delve into its contents. The challenge is to develop a project proposal that answers one of the following questions:   ◾ How to use space technologies to make our Planet more sustainable?   ◾ How can Space and space exploration be made more sustainable?   ◾ How can Italy be the engine of space sustainability?   🎯 The aim of the proposals is to use space science and technology to make the Planet and Space more sustainable, as well as to use satellite or mission data and services to improve the status of one or more of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
