🌍 Building Knowledge through Collaboration: Highlights from PANGEOS COST Action Summer Training School 📊 Last week, PANGEOS COST Action had the privilege of hosting the PANGEOS COST Action Summer Training School at the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest, where 36 participants from across Europe came together to learn about Joint Uncertainty Analysis and the Standardization of Hyperspectral Data Products. This event was a true reflection of the core values of COST Action: 🤝 Collaboration: Bringing together experts, early-career researchers, and trainers from Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITC). A total of 17 participants (8 females, 8 males, 1 trainer) hailed from ITC, showcasing our commitment to fostering scientific growth across Europe. 🌱 Inclusivity & Diversity: Of the 26 trainees, we achieved a perfect gender balance with 13 females and 13 males. More importantly, 24 young researchers (11 female, 13 male) actively participated, highlighting COST’s dedication to empowering the next generation of scientists and innovators. 💡 Excellence: With 7 expert trainers (1 female, 6 males), participants engaged in cutting-edge discussions and practical exercises that promote innovation in remote sensing and geospatial science. 🔬 Interdisciplinary & Future-Oriented: The event brought together a broad spectrum of expertise, bridging disciplines and fostering an environment where young researchers, especially from ITC, can flourish and form connections for future collaborations. These initiatives are not just about learning—they are about building networks and creating opportunities for young researchers to take on leadership roles in scientific advancements, especially in environmental monitoring and geospatial technologies. A big thank you to our hosts and to all participants who contributed to making this training a success! Together, we continue to build a strong, inclusive scientific community, paving the way for innovation and collaboration across Europe. 🌍💡 #COSTactions #PANGEOS #RemoteSensing #EnvironmentalScience #InclusivenessTargetCountries #YoungResearchers #Collaboration #Innovation

Meet #SandraBouwhuis, scientific director of the Institute for Avian Research in Wilhelmshaven and professor at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg. In this short interview, she shares with you her story, her experiences and her advice on becoming and being a professor. 𝟭. 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗱𝗼𝗰 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽? The first, I would say, was learning how to support someone else take ownership of a project, i.e. supervising, rather than leading a project. There was no training involved to learn how to do this, and the skillset needed was a totally different one from the one I had. The second was learning that good lectures run at perhaps 5% of the speed of good talks you'd give at a conference. Again, there was no training involved to learn how to do this, so it took a lot of 'studying my students' to figure it out by trial-and-error. The third was maybe to learn how to live without someone telling me whether I did a good job or not. Although independence came natural to me in terms of doing science, it did not in terms of managing a group of people. The responsibility felt (feels) enormous and 'knowing' on your own whether you're doing a good-enough job a bit petrifying. 𝟮. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿? I thoroughly enjoy watching my PhD students become independent researchers, and feel the German term 'Doktormutter' is highly accurate - group members feel like extended family members and learning about their hopes and dreams for life and trying to support them as they chase these is a really beautiful thing. I also thoroughly enjoy the freedom, insecurity and excitement that come with shaping research trajectories and doing research. Allowing myself to still do fieldwork and write the occasional paper from start to finish is a privilege. 𝟯. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀? Hang in there, even when you're the underdog things might still work out. And prioritise. As a people-pleaser I personally find this very hard, but I do think the key to success is choosing wisely how to spend your limited time. Safeguarding time to do the things that are important to your career (read, think, discuss with colleagues, and write, write, write), while also protecting some time to do the things that others could do too, but that keep you happy and healthy (fieldwork, in my case) is what I would recommend. #professorship #career #academia

We need more open hybrid workshops on interdisciplinary subjects! Beginning of last week was truly insightful for me thanks to the Behave lab at the University of Milan. Almost two full days of presentations devoted to agent-based models of social networks! Interdisciplinarity of this topic has a twofold effect: on one hand many researchers from different areas are able to enrich it with their unique perspectives, on another hand the amount and wide diversity of related studies hinder the systematization of material. The latest was a significant challenge for a literature review within my work on master thesis where I explored how social networks influence emergence of endogenous institutions for small-scale fisheries. Therefore I was beyond happy to join this workshop aimed at young professionals in this field. It was great to listen to different academics that share your interests and to hear that these people often encounter the same dilemmas. Even though I joined from my bedroom in the Hague and was deprived of insightful informal discussions and the beauty of the city Milan, I have gained a ton of inspiration (and validation of my thesis struggles). But let's return to my call at the beginning of this post: "we need more open hybrid workshops on interdisciplinary subjects!". Do you agree? Thank you to Federico Bianchi, Flaminio Squazzoni, Raffaele Vacca for organizing this! #ABM #SNA
