I am delighted to share that our paper, titled "The Molecular Insights of Cyanobacterial Bioremediations of Heavy Metals: The Current and Future Challenges", has been published in Frontiers in Microbiology (Scopus, Q1, SCIE, Impact Factor: 4.0). The paper explores critical molecular mechanisms behind cyanobacterial bioremediation of heavy metals and addresses both present challenges and future opportunities in the field. Ahmed Luay Osman and colleagues (Gulf Medical University) have completed a study to evaluate the antifungal activity of terbinafine in its nano form against yeast organisms in vitro and compare its effectiveness to the normal form of terbinafine. I’m excited to share about our new paper with Luca Chiesa where we benchmarked AlphaFold-Multimer generated structures of chemokine – chemokine receptor complexes. The complexes formed by chemokines (small cytokine proteins) and chemokine receptors (class A GPCRs) are a really interesting target for protein-protein complex structure prediction, as there is a large number of unique chemokines (~50) and chemokine receptors (~20 CKRs), meaning there is quite a large number possible unique chemokine - CKR complexes. These guys have a lot of control over our immune system, and play a part in many diseases, so it would be important to understand their structures. With already more than 20 X-ray or cryo-EM structures of chemokine-CKR complexes solved, we set out to evaluate if AlphaFold-Multimer could accurately replicate them and thus assist in modeling the yet unsolved ones. The predictions of AlphaFold-Multimer surprised us with their accuracy, and for many complexes they even replicated the atomic-level details of the binding modes in the transmembrane binding cavity which are responsible for receptor activation. So if your project could benefit from structural data of a chemokine-CKR complex which hasn’t been solved, I’d definitely give AlphaFold-Multimer a try. For this project, Luca Chiesa developed a new pipeline called LIT-AlphaFold (available at https://lnkd.in/eKZiZCgZ) which allowed us to make the choice to generate active or inactive state chemokine receptor structures in complex with chemokines.
