Love the thought exercise! It will depend on the market sector being served, but regardless, the profession will need to adapt/evolve in order to thrive and stay relevant. To speak to your previous post on Baumol's cost disease, we will need to justify the rising costs of our specialized service and improve the value our expertise adds to the client's bottom line. I'd argue we need to move upstream in the project lifecycle and enter the development market. We can leverage our design thinking and problem solving skills to help clients look into sites that are a bit more complicated, yet still viable: adaptive reuse & infill development. These typically present challenges to simple building program/geometry due to zoning, topography or odd parcel proportions. Academia will need to adapt to better prepare the next wave of designers to address the complexities of the development market. Let's add to our repetoir by learning about market dynamics, trends, and regulations of real estate so we can bring some more properties to the table! My response is inspired by a book I'm currently reading: Architect & Developer by James Petty, AIA
