Many risk factors that lead to involvement in the criminal justice system also impact an individual's health. Public health experts refer to these as social determinants of health. Where we're born, live, learn, work, play and worship shapes our future. And involvment in the criminal justice system affects our health. Research shows that individuals involved in the criminal justice system are more likely to have faced early trauma, substance use disorder, and mental health disorders, all public health issues. Ideally, prevention and response efforts should work together to improve outcomes. Let's work towards a healthier society by bridging the gap between public health prevention efforts and criminal justice response. #publichealth #criminaljustice #socialdeterminantsofhealth
