Clients often ask how many cameras are needed for their project. My response is straightforward - let's start with two and walk through the creative to confirm. Having a minimum of two cameras not only allows for an exponentially larger number and style of shots to be captured but also reduces the time needed to complete the shot list. The final number of cameras and accessories will always depend on the creative vision. Using only one camera severely limits the scope of what can be captured. If budget is a concern, solutions can be found, but relying on just one camera is rarely that solution. 🎥 🎥 #videoproduction #videoproducer #camerasonset #productiontips

So you need to capture a late-night event- How do you film it without lighting?? 🌃 Here are 3 Methods to Filming in Low-Light Scenarios 🎬 1. Make sure your camera has a larger camera sensor. We're talking cameras with APS-C or Full Frame sensors to start! A large sensor is more sensitive to light, which yield incredible results- even in the dead of night! 💡 2. Using a "Faster" Lens means having a lens with a low F-Stop or a low Aperture setting. The easiest way to explain Aperture to non-filmmakers is essentially like squinting your eyes. The more you squint, the darker your vision gets- even though it's more focused. But if you open up your eyes as wide as you can, you're letting more light hit the sensor. Lenses with an F2.8 or lower Aperture are generally really good in low-light! 🎥 3. Lower the Framerate! If you're following the 180 degree rule (which you should be), having a higher framerate, means having a higher shutter angle/speed. When you shoot at a higher shutter speed, your sensor has less exposure time to light. So lower your framerate from 60fps to 30 then 24! 🏃♀️ Bonus: DeNoise your Footage in Post-Production. I threw this one in here because it can get very expensive, very quickly when you upgrade to a larger camera sensor and buy faster lenses. But don't worry; even Hollywood Blockbusters denoise their footage in post! It's a part of the process! EQ x Tulane Gear Breakdown: For our recent shoot with Tulane School of Social Work, DP Ryan Watts opted to use a Sony FX6 with Sigma Cine Prime lenses mounted to DJI Ronin RS3 Pro with Tilta Advanced Ring Grip for our "walk & talk" style shots. For lighting, he used a LitePanels Gemini through an 8' Gridcloth + Natural Light for key light, and created contrast (negative fill) with a black floppy. Lookout for the full video to be released soon! #cameragear #gear #videography #videoproduction #videoadversiting #tulane #sigmalens #ronan #fx6 #sony #sonycamera

What I See vs My Camera 🎥 When on shoots like this with multiple people, it’s very important to not get in people’s way. They are taking part in an event and don’t necessarily want a camera in their face 😂 This is were lens choice is crucial. Using a longer lens will help us get closer to the action, without stepping on anybody’s toes. On this shoot we used 85mm for the majority.

"IF ONLY I HAD THE RIGHT CAMERA, THEN I KNOW I COULD BE A REAL FILMMAKER". So often I hear young #videographers and #filmmakers swear that a better piece of gear will make them better at what they do. The honest answer is it won't. Sure there are noticeable improvements with each new generation of camera that's released... but we're talking small, small increments here. The truth is, a better camera isn't going to make you a better camera person. A great shot isn't dependent on the camera's sensor but on what you, as the filmmaker, fill the sensor with. The framing, the lighting, lens choice, the backdrop, angle (so many variables). A well-constructed shot is going to look great in almost any camera... even cameras that are 15 years old. And that's the point I'm making, if you're still #learning your craft or if your clients don't care what #camera you use, then don't spend $hit loads of money. Rather buy an older secondhand camera and hone your skills. My recommendations would be the Sony FS700, Canon C100, old Black Magic Cameras, Sony A7SI... there's a long list of great cameras you can get at a great price. Remember, the camera is the tool! You are the talent!
