When we created The Conversation, the goal for it was simple: add value. And the best way to do it was to ensure it was people-led, with insights from the world’s smartest featured in every issue. It’s simple, with expert perspective on a curated short list of topics rather than an endless list of news items. And, above all, it’s not about buttons, it’s about you — and giving you what you need to hire better. In this issue, we asked Compass Group's VP of Strategic HR Partnerships Shay Johnson about doing more with less budget, getting TA more involved in business decisions, and how AI helps them hire 160,000 people annually in the US with just 20 recruiters.

Why is the "human" element fading from Human Resources? It seems more apparent every year. Don't we need to ensure we are maintaining meaningful "people" conversations and engaging with business leaders while still having "people" and "humans" at the forefront of our consulting advice? As one post said the other day, "What's good for the people is good for the business." It's 2024, and I get using technology, AI and data - don't get me wrong, those are significant breakthroughs that I love - work smarter, not harder! The Gen X in me still values coffee-type conversations. I might be aging myself, but I still LOVE meeting people and having introspective discussions. I think people like to be heard and understood. I’ve noticed HR departments, including Talent Acquisition, becoming disconnected from what truly matters—being collaborative, authentic, "helpful," real, honest, smart, caring for people, standing up for what's right, being advisors and staying aligned with core values. Isn't that why HR became a thing? Everything seems driven by budgets (or lack thereof) and business priorities that overlook people and proper processes, with little focus on practical solutions or common sense. There's a financial crunch everywhere, but are we sacrificing all human touch for data? Will we eventually need to change the name of the profession? It's an interesting debate, and with a full moon tonight, it felt like the right time to share. People are just "off" this week. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

The most commonly overlooked aspect of quality of hire: Having The Hard Conversations... 🗣 I've found that the biggest challenge with measuring & improving quality of hire isn't finding the data, it's having the uncomfortable conversations that lead to change. It's unpacking the feelings, stories, and emotions behind the data that can be the most challenging. This takes a commitment to having healthier conversations. What hard conversation have you been putting off the past week? 1️⃣ That's where change happens. 2️⃣ That's where growth happens. 3️⃣ Transformation is your choice. When we avoid uncomfortable conversations, no amount of quality of hire surveys will help you make positive changes. To my HR/People Ops professionals, comment below ✍ Why is quality of hire so difficult to improve?

Are you curious? Curious about you - and why you do ALL the things you do (or don't do)? Curious about your boss? Curious about your partner? We are not bad people because we judge and assume. That is how our brains are hard-wired. Our brains love data and as we gain more data each year, our brains can convince us that our judgements and assumptions are facts....but are they really? Only one way to find out! BE CURIOUS?? Ask the questions. Be that person - at home AND at work. #hr #shrm #happinessatwork #happinessmatters #curiosity

What better way to start a Wednesday morning…. a Linkedin Live Webinar with Natal Dank from PXO Culture, Janet Scotcher and Eoin Cannon talking about HR & People Trends and Predictions for 2025. Wondering what you missed? Too much to mention to be honest but here’s some snippets of the stuff that resonated with me: - Seeing HRBPs as employee experience, product-led, account managers..... using their understanding of the needs of a business area to sell people products that fit and add value - hell yeah, that totally gets my vote! - AI Co-Intelligence… the need to understand it, use it, give it a personality. - Being authentic, companies standing for what they believe in and actually delivering that.... words and actions that build trust. - Bite-sized, personalised learning and career experiences, not career ladders. - Skills and roles, not jobs and functions.... future-proofing to avoid the coming skills crisis. - The human connection and it's link to productivity… yep, there it is again.... the importance of being human #justsaying Definitely food for thought. Thanks for an inspiring start to the middle of the week. #businessgrowth #humancentricity #businesspartnering #employeeexperience

BIG announcement.... ....delighted to share that Jason Straughan and I are working together to share an amazing new tool with you..... The greatest asset, and our biggest challenge, for each of our businesses: our people. While they drive innovation, growth, and customer satisfaction, the wrong hires or misaligned teams can severely impact any company’s performance. According to a study by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the average cost-per-hire is around $4,129, and the average time it takes to fill a position is 42 days. But what happens when we make the wrong hire? A bad hire doesn’t just waste money, a CFOs nightmare! — it disrupts team dynamics, lowers morale, and can result in costly turnover. In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor estimates that the cost of a bad hire can reach up to 30% of the employee’s first-year earnings. Ouch. Moreover, Gallup’s research reveals that disengaged employees can cost U.S. companies up to $550 billion a year in lost productivity. Would you be interested in a tool that is designed to address these challenges by helping you make data-driven decisions that align with your company’s culture and needs? Thrilled to introduce you to Aptive Index. It's an incredible, science backed tool. Using Aptive Index, you will be able to understand the personalities, strengths, and potential of your employees, and you will be able to create a team that doesn’t just fit—but thrives. Contact Jason Straughan or myself to learn more about how Aptive Index can transform your hiring process! #FutureOfWork #LeadershipDevelopment #WorkplaceCulture
