Employing international graduates highlighted a painful bias I had 🙈 It highlighted that we didn't do this before, because I thought that this country's visa route is cumbersome, scary and off-putting for employers, and therefore it's easier to dismiss this option all together. This closes the door on those who apply for roles who would need a visa. But, we pushed ourselves as we came across people, who frankly, were worth it. We learned that, like other hard things, it's rewarding for those who do it anyway. We learned that businesses hurt themselves if they exclude international grads because of the same bias we had. But the bias is not unwarranted, .gov material on this is a mess, and the .gov website does a good job highlighting all the ways they will slap you as a director for getting it wrong. But, it's not that hard to keep right. It's better to speak with others who have done it, as it's not that hard once you know how. Businesses want ambitious people, what's more ambitious then moving your life into a different language, culture and country to build a career and future? Let’s take a moment to congratulate the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump ! His policies have always sparked discussion, and for those of us in job consultancy and supporting international students, this new term could bring both opportunities and challenges. Here’s what we’re preparing for: 📈 Potential Opportunities for International Talent: - Skilled Worker Openings    Trump’s focus on a merit-based immigration system could open more doors for high-skilled professionals. - Job Market Growth  With plans to boost U.S. industries, we may see more job creation—a positive outlook for consultants helping talent navigate the U.S. market. ⚠️ Possible Challenges on the Horizon: - Tougher Visa Regulations  If past policies resurface, international students may face more hurdles in securing post-study work visas. - increased Scrutiny on Sponsorships    Job consultancies might experience more rigorous evaluations on sponsorships and visa processes, which could slow down placements. As we step into this new era, staying informed and agile will be essential. For consultancies and students alike, adaptability will be our greatest asset. We’re eager to contribute our skills to the workforce, but visa sponsorship requirements often make it difficult for companies to hire us, even amid labor shortages—causing employers to miss out on valuable talent! 🌍💼 Despite holding *Zoekjaar* permit that allows us to be hired at minimum wage, we still face reluctance from companies to sponsor us. Thousands of job applications remain rejected, we’re left wondering why. Is it due to complex IND processes? 🧐 The lack of clarity creates uncertainty, making it harder to plan our careers and lives here. 🔑 Key Points: - 🇳🇱 Many companies hesitate to offer visa sponsorship, limiting our potential to contribute to a diverse workforce. - 🏗️ Unfilled positions remain across industries—roles that skilled international graduates could fill. - 🎓 The uncertainty around job opportunities adds stress during our studies, impacting focus and academic performance. - 🔒 Restrictive visa policies may deter future international students from choosing the Netherlands, knowing they may ultimately have to return home instead of integrating into Dutch society. 📝 What We’re Asking For We kindly urge the Dutch government to consider a pathway for international graduates and make an exception for them to renew visas independently upon securing a job that meets wage and insurance requirements—regardless of whether the company is IND-recognized. This change would enable us to work, live, pay taxes 💰, and actively support the Dutch economy and society. Since joining Sheffield University Management School just over 2 years ago, I have reconnected with and met so many lovely people. Networking and seeing how I can help and connect people is what I love to do (it makes me smile too!) 🥰 I have never worked in such a multicultural environment and I love that I get to work with colleagues and students from all over the world 😊 International students and graduates can be valuable additions to your workforce. Offering more than just language skills, they bring with them diversity of thoughts and cultural insights that can support your organisation's growth. I personally admire their resilience too - the many International students that I have met have left their home countries & families (many of them have left well paid, senior roles) to embark on a high level (Postgraduate) qualification in a language that is not their native language and in a country most have never been too (a cold one at that sometimes!). I never knew but I do now! International students can sponsor themselves for 2 years (on a Graduate Route visa) when they graduate - this is a cost to them and not for you as the employer. There might even be an opportunity for you to recruit an International graduate on a temporary contract for one or two years? Many International graduates struggle to find work in the UK, as I think that many employers, particularly SMEs, can be put off by the thought of having to pay for sponsorship (via the Skilled Worker visa) and complete the necessary paperwork.   There has been a lot in the press over the last few months about International students/graduates and visas etc - I am sure it's very confusing for any of us not working in this field on a daily basis and this is why my two colleagues Yiyun Ling & Karen Allan have partnered with experts from Carter Thomas Solicitors and GIT. 1000s of international students in the UK get REJECTED because of their VISA status 🤯 This is because we international students are NOT eligible for 93% of UK jobs. 😔 (It gets worse). For the 7% of jobs we are eligible for, employers would rather hire a British graduate to avoid sponsorship costs. 💸 International students are constantly overlooked and undervalued by UK employers. 😞 This needs to CHANGE. 🚨 Here's why UK employers should hire us international students: 1️⃣ Delayed Gratification: International students face 100s of rejections DAILY, yet they keep applying with unwavering determination. 💪 Our ability to stay focused on long-term goals, despite short-term setbacks, is a rare and valuable skill that will benefit any UK employer. 🎯 2️⃣ Multi-Tasking: 90% of international students have ONE part-time job, with many of us having TWO so we can afford to pay rent. 🌀 With the added stress of university coursework, we international students have mastered the art of time management and prioritisation. ⏰ UK employers need to picture the efficiency we'll bring to your company, effortlessly balancing multiple projects and deadlines with ease. 🤹 3️⃣ Adaptability: International students pack their entire lives into ONE suitcase and move to a foreign land with the HOPE of making it BIG one day.🌍 We leave our family, friends and spouses (sometimes even our OWN children) behind to start a new life. 👨👩👧👦 We do all this with ZERO complaints, despite having valuable skills UK employers normally look for. 🤐 We wake up to the same email DAILY: "Unfortunately, we regret to inform you that…" 📧 I understand this pain (I lost count of how many times I got rejected because of my VISA status). 😢 So, if you're an international student reading this that wants to be given a shot for their dream UK job, comment "HIRE US" so this post can reach 1000s of UK employers 🚀 And if you're a UK employer reading this, this is your sign to give us international students a chance. 📣
