My takeaways from The Future of RetailTech event which kicked off the Leeds Digital festival this morning. 1. The high street wants more independents, but costs for smaller retailers remain prohibitive due to business rates, retail crime rates, rising salaries... 2. Loyalty schemes are working well in part because mobile payment apps have solved the clunky UX of using cards. 3. Customers are happy to sell their loyalty data in return for discounts (cf social/search platforms who give free services in return for data). 4. Customers want personalisation and great CX: there is an opportunity to use tech/AI to reduce the cost of generating the insights needed to do this well. 5. Retail Media offers a high margin revenue opportunity for retailers: Retail Media will take ad market share from Meta, Amazon, Google etc. Thanks to Hippo for hosting and Catherine S., Adrian Berry and Kerry Jenkin for great insights. Spent the last 24 hours with the Stussy, Inc. crew in Toronto at their Archive event 🎱 Very few brands have a diehard core who will line up for hours to get their hands on exclusive merch from the past 40+ years, but Stüssy is a clear exception. Angle collaborated with the Stüssy team to design and build an online to IRL engine, built on Shopify and leveraging Apple & Google wallet pass technology to allow friends of the brand to pick & schedule a time slot, download a Stüssy branded Archive pass, and skip the line by checking in at the door using Shopify POS. Like checking in for your flight and boarding a plane, the game has changed for Stüssy to elevate this experience for their core!
