In the world of business, it's easy to get tempted by a shiny new client opportunity - even if it means bending our rules a bit. But let's be real, not every shiny thing is gold, and opportunities just aren't worth ditching our core values for. Just the other day, a colleague of mine was chatting with a potential client who wanted us to jump through hoops with some pretty one-sided terms for hiring a specialist role. Over here at GURLER MAE, we're all about partnerships. We're not just another agency on a list; we're here to grow with our clients. That means keeping things straightforward and fair, which is super important for our boutique vibe and keeping our cash flow healthy so we can give our clients our best. A: I was looking for something close to home in a field that was secure and provided me the time outside of work to enjoy time with my family. I like the hours and being home in the afternoons to have dinner with my wife. Also, working in a secure field and growing company was important to me and I felt that MD&A fit that perfectly. Q: What was the organization like when you joined? A: The organization when I joined is very similar to what it is now. You notice and appreciate the effort being put forth by leadership to foster change and accomplish goals. The longer I am here the more I am learning about the dynamics and culture of what leadership is trying to build here. Q: What aspect do you enjoy most about your role? A: I really enjoy being able to take an area that needed improvement and make it my own. I've been busy interviewing a lot of people for Laborer and HEO roles. ❔️ I always ask, "What do you enjoy most and what are you good at?" The MOST common answer from young and old alike is some variation of, "I love working with my hands and seeing the finished product, seeing the transformation I helped create working hard with a team." So, make absolutely no mistake - there are lots of people who want to work, lots of people who love this work for what it is! Young people who think this work is cool and old-timers who want to stay in the game for as long as their bodies will allow. ❔️ I also always ask, "What do you enjoy least or find most challenging or frustrating?" ↖️↗️ This is where the generations diverge. The younger ones hate being yelled at and being expected to sink or swim. They want to feel competent and to be successful. They want to learn. They crave mentorship. The older folks, reflecting on longer careers, most commonly express regret for lack of balance. They don't mind working hard, but long hours and travel have kept them from their families. They're proud to have been able to provide, but they've missed a lot, and can't get that time back. What this means for hiring: If you don’t have a mentorship culture, change it, and then promote the hell out of it! 📣 If you haven't figured out how to balance schedules, find a way and then promote the hell out of it! 📣 If you already have these things figured out, know that a lot of your competitors haven't yet.
