Now is the time to take steps to harden the cyberdefenses for your nonprofit -- not after you've been hacked. In this piece, several experts suggest relatively easy first steps to do so and resources to help.

I feel a little guilty promoting cybersecurity books by O'Reilly when mine is published by Packt, but I have three reasons: 1: I want you to be safe. It doesn't matter if you get advice from O'Reilly authors or Packt authors, so long as you get good advice and implement it. 2: Both companies regularly do wonderful bundles through Humble Bundle and if you sign up for their mailing list, you'll get alerted to great bundles regularly. 3: It's twenty-two ebooks for twenty-five dollars and you can earmark a large chunk of that to support Code for America (expand the "Adjust Donation" box below the checkout button to adjust how 70% of your purchase price is distributed between Humble, the publisher, and the non-profit).

Thinking about joining a board? I say "no" to serving on non profit boards, a lot. Not because I don't care, not because I lack passion for their mission... But, because to do it right takes a lot of time, effort, and thoughtfulness. It takes patience, collaboration, and the willingness to build consensus. More importantly, serving on a non profit board isn't just volunteering... it's a huge responsibility. As the directors of a federally tax sheltered (not for profit) corporation, there are many responsibilities and therefore a lot of personal liability. If you couldn't tell already, today is clean-the-office day and I just stumbled on this gem from past BoardSource training. "Ten Basic Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards" It's short and sweet but comprehensive. I highly recommend this and other resources for any professional considering serving on a nonprofit/community board, especially in cybersecurity. In addition to general resources, each association will also have guidance and resources for local chapters, e.g., ISC2, Information Systems Security Association (ISSA), ISACA, Cloud Security Alliance, BSides, InfraGard, etc.

Ria Sethi Your determination to turn a personal challenge into a solution that helps others is truly inspiring. Cyberbullying is such an urgent issue, and it's admirable that you're raising awareness and taking action, even when faced with rejection. Realization that online safety starts in elementary school is spot on! Teaching kids and parents early is crucial to preventing future problems. The fact that you’ve turned your experience into a meaningful campaign like Cyber For Youth (C4Y) is exactly what’s needed to tackle this growing issue. Keep pushing forward—you’re making a real difference!
Wow. Thank you, thank you, thank you. 🙏🏾 ❤️ We reached our fundraising goal of $5000 because of your support, donations, and amplification. In my freshman year, I was cyberbullied along with other kids - right before our finals. Stressed and worried, I set up meetings with the principal at my school, contacted authorities for help, and even attempted to start a club to raise awareness. Despite my efforts, progress was minimal, and every step I took was met with rejection. Determined to continue raising awareness about online safety, I began learning about cybersecurity and started campaigns, working with other high schoolers who had similar experiences. During this time, I realized the same issues also affected my local middle school. That's when I realized the core of the problem - kids have devices and are online when they are 2 to 3 years old and online safety and cybersecurity education needs to start in preschool and kindergarten, not middle school or high school. The issue isn't just the children; parents also struggle with knowing how to limit or monitor their child's device usage and in many cases don't have the resources to ensure their kids are safe when online. A month ago, I started an online safety initiative for elementary schoolers called Cyber For Youth (C4Y), aimed at helping children and their parents navigate the online world safely. I also wanted teenagers - those who had faced challenges or were victims of cyberbullying - to be the ones educating others. Here's the progress we've made with C4Y so far: - We have built a team of over 50 dedicated high schoolers. We had over 200 interested applicants! - Currently, we’re researching and writing workshops for parents and children, building a website, growing our social media presence, and collaborating with parents, teachers, professionals, and nonprofits who are eager to learn more and provide feedback about our cause. If you're a parent or teacher interested in updates, feel free to join us here: https://lnkd.in/ghYWnbpT - We reached our fundraising goal of $5,000 within just 5 days! If you'd like to support our cause, you can donate here: https://lnkd.in/gBXNN_5K I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported this initiative by sharing their stories, donating, or reaching out to me. Together, we are making a difference. #CyberSafety #YouthEmpowerment #Cybersecurity #DigitalSafety #CyberbullyingPrevention #onlinesafety #informationsecurity #infosec
