It's HR awards season in Asia, and we're seeing the finest workplaces being celebrated with grand ceremonies. The spotlight rightly shines on those businesses which invest significantly in creating exceptional environments for their teams. Congratulations to all the winners and contributors at the awards. Yet, I can't help but think about the other side of the coin - our SMEs. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are truly the backbone of our economy, stimulating much of the innovation we witness today. These businesses might not always be hosted at luxury events or boast global recognition, but they play an essential role in fostering innovative and productive work cultures. It's crucial to acknowledge their contributions just as much as we do for the major corporations. I fully understand the economics behind how these large events are conceived, and I recognise that they are a business in themselves. That said, it would be refreshing if the organisers could equitably represent smaller companies when creating awards. It's important to level the playing field for those who #domorewithless, offering attractive and engaging career opportunities without the support of specialist departments or multi-layered leadership structures. To the SMEs that continuously strive to be great places to work, hats off to you! Let's not send the message that only large, established brands are the sought-after employers. By recognising SMEs in these awards, we can inspire the next generation and foster a culture of innovation and inclusivity.
