🚦 William Phelps Eno (1858-1945) , known as the "Father of Traffic," played a crucial role in traffic regulation. Despite never learning to drive a car himself, Eno's contributions have had a lasting impact on the way we navigate our streets and cities. Here are some highlights of his life and work: - Born: June 3, 1858, in New York City. - Education: Attended Hopkins Grammar School, Williston Academy, and graduated from Yale University in 1882. - Innovations: Credited with creating the stop sign, pedestrian crosswalk, traffic circle, one-way street, taxi stand, and pedestrian safety islands. - Traffic Plans: Developed the first traffic plans for major cities like New York, London, and Paris. His rotary traffic plan was implemented at Columbus Circle in New York City in 1905, at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris in 1907, and at Piccadilly Circus in London in 1926. - Publications: Wrote the first-ever manual of police traffic regulations and authored "Rules of the Road" in 1903. - Legacy: Founded the Eno Transportation Foundation in 1921 to promote improvements in transportation and traffic management. We're back at the Gordie Howe bridge. With speed at the top of the mind in logistics, one could say this bridge represents a doubling down on #justintime. As I've mentioned before, this is a great project to see come together. My last post outlined how the second bridge could be interpreted as an indication of the #justincase mindset—two bridges are better than one. One could also say the Gordie Howe bridge is also doubling down on the #justintime mindset as well. While the Ambassador Bridge will get you from Detroit to Windsor, if there's any sort of back-up, you and everyone else trying to cross the border have to wait... and if you're not done waiting, you just have to wait longer. Sometimes the trucks back up for miles along I-75 in SW Detroit. The Canadian side of the border is also a factor in this. The Ambassador Bridge lands in a neighborhood in Windsor, slowing down traffic for trucks and creating a lot of noise, pollution, and bad neighbor issues in a residential area. In a world where everyone wants everything yesterday, having two options to get across the border and get across the border more quickly in effect checks both boxes—#justintime and #justincase don't need to be mutually exclusive. Outside of the this, I believe the Gordie Howe Bridge will have a positive effect on our industrial market, and I'm looking forward to seeing this project open in 2025. Reflecting on a recent trip to Boston, I stumbled upon this picture of the subway system (The T). I must admit, I avoided the T like the plague the whole week because I was convinced that I would get lost, and it would make life even more stressful than it had to be. I was even willing to pay premium prices to get Ubers instead of even trying it out. After about 30 people told me that the T was the best way to get to Fenway, I finally caved in and gave it a try. The instructions were clear- take the green line west and just don’t get on car "E". But about 15 minutes into the ride, I realized that of course we somehow got onto car "E". I was right- the subway was not the easiest way to get around, and I was now in some random area and would have to Uber just to get back to where I needed to be. However, two days later, we rode the T again (reluctantly) with my brother-in-law who was familiar with the area. Turns out the subway is in fact an easy way to get around if you are with someone who knows what they are doing. The same is true in life and in finance- sometimes we are scared to start because we don’t know every detail, where if we just had someone in our corner that we trust, the result could be optimal. Get to Know the Board Tuesday… Sheryl Santi, SANTI EXPRESS, Inc Agent for Wheaton World Van Lines 1. How did you get your start in the moving and storage industry? Where was your first job, and what did you do? I actually trained as a nurse and ended up falling in love with a mover from Neptune Moving. This was in the mid-70s. We moved to Rockland County and bought a moving truck. I learned how to give estimates. We eventually became a certified woman-owned business. We had no advertising budget and received all of our work through word of mouth. 2. What do you like and/or appreciate the most about the industry? I loved selling. Helping people during one of the most stressful times was very rewarding to me. 3. How did you get involved with the NYSWMA Board of Directors, and how has this helped you or your business? Bruce Gold, with Gold Service Movers, another NYSMWA member, called me about attending a meeting in my area. I really enjoyed being amongst other industry professionals, being with like-minded people. I met the then-Director of AMSA at one of our meetings and ended up being in their quarterly magazine! The connections, people, help from other movers has been invaluable to me. 4. What do you like to do, outside of the business?
