It's World EV Day today. Over the weekend and again this morning, news comes of trouble at Volkswagen with reports that they may have to shutter plant in Germany and rumbles of gripes at Cariad (its software development arm) over a just announced a $t5bn tie up with Rivian for EV software development. We've also seen wet fuel providers over the past year or so looking to exit the Home charging market on the basis that it's not profitable (at least for them). What's going on? At one level, you might be forgiven for thinking this is product/market fit, at another, well there are companies making profits (viz. myenergi), but maybe it's a bit more than either of these. An industry is pivoting from a main focus on engineering to a main focus on software and established companies may struggle to understand the new world, if they recognise it at all. I actually think VW are starting to understand this, which is why they're changing how they work. When an industry pivots, business has to pivot with it or risk going defunct. The real story is less the companies hitting the news, but more those that have yet to start the process of adaptation. At ADAPTAVIS, we help firms to make that pivot in a sustainable way, meaning we increase capability and enable a new mindset to stick. What's your view of the VW news? #worldevday #ev #transformationalleadership

Earlier this year, our conversation, led by Tony Cannestra, Prescott Watson and Eric Owski, on recent trends in electrification provided valuable insights into the evolving EV landscape. Here are some key takeaways: EV Market Growth & Challenges: Despite significant governmental funding, EV sales growth has slowed, highlighting issues like limited charging infrastructure and high home charging costs. OEM Shifts & New Entrants: Traditional OEMs are struggling with the transition to electrification, while newcomers like Tesla and Rivian gain a competitive edge through innovative designs and streamlined processes. Design Simplicity & Cost Efficiency: Adopting simplified designs, as seen with Tesla, allows for higher profit margins and market dominance, despite offering fewer models. Market Bifurcation: The EV market may split into luxury and mass-market segments, with luxury OEMs securing a clear path while the future of mass-market EVs remains uncertain. Affordability & Accessibility: Affordable models like BYD’s Seagull demonstrate the potential for low-cost EVs, though challenges such as safety standards and production costs persist. Let's build on these insights next month at our 10th Annual Mobility Tech Workshop on November 12th in Santa Cruz and Bonny Doon!
