On 13 January, Mr. Nawaf Salam, President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), was elected as the new Prime Minister of Lebanon. In a statement, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, welcomed his election, highlighting the formation of a new government as a critical step forward for Lebanon. As announced by his Spokesperson on Monday during his daily briefing from New York, the Secretary-General plans to travel to Lebanon, to engage with the newly elected President and Prime Minister, and to meet with the UN peacekeeping force, UNIFIL, to express his support and commend their work. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) joins the UNSG in welcoming these positive political developments, and reaffirms its readiness to assist the Lebanese Presidency, Government, Parliament, and people, in advancing peace, stability, sovereignty, and national reconciliation, in alignment with the Taif Accord, the Baabda Declaration, and UN Security Council Resolutions 1701 (2006), 1559 (2004), as well as other relevant international frameworks. #Lebanon #UnitedNations #PrimeMinister Learn more: https://lnkd.in/d3izYY7T United Nations News
