I've had dozens of conversations these last few weeks about #schoolsafety, especially in light of the recent events, but also with the same frustrations as I always hear. The overall themes boil down to three things: People -are the needs of the children being met? -do they feel like anyone cares? -how frustrated and angry must someone be to hurt others like that? Perimeter -who has access to my school property? -are they being properly vetted? -are weapons searches going to be the norm? Permission -how can I better control access inside my buildings to keep kids protected/behind locked doors? -how can I see who is causing problems or in need? -who else should be a stakeholder in my district plans? Ideas and discussions don't solve problems on their own, but panic yields patchwork rather than quality systems.
