A strong predictor of future violent injury is having been hospitalized for a past one—which is why we need solutions to gun violence that help break the cycle. I’m excited to share Everytown for Gun Safety and The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention's comprehensive report, detailing the compelling social and economic benefits of Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Programs (HVIPs). HVIPs are a promising strategy for reducing violence, and are already making a difference in over 85 cities nationwide. This report provides research-informed guidance on the budget and key resources necessary to implement an HVIP that can reduce gunshot wound reinjuries, along with a downloadable workbook that allows for local cost customizations. Gun violence is not only traumatizing, it’s expensive. The cost of nonfatal firearm assault injuries in the first year post-injury alone amounts to an estimated $37,435 in medical expenses. But our analysis reveals that a standard HVIP would cost just under $1.1M for each of the first three years, coming out to less than $10,800 per participant. Benefits extend far beyond mere financial savings. These programs can save lives and build safer communities. Please check out this tool, share with your network, and be an advocate for the transformative potential of HVIPs. https://lnkd.in/d93CZ7Tc

'We want to talk to you about knife crime so you can support your children and help them make safe choices.' Asma Maya Joseph-Hussain, CEO of the Safety Centre. This week is #knifecrimeawarenessweek and we're talking about the importance of speaking with young people about #knifecrime. We invite all parents and carers to join us for our free upcoming knife crime virtual sessions for adults looking to support their children on this topic. We know that knife crime is on the rise and that tragically often young people are victims or perpetrators of #knifecrime. 78 young people under the age of 25 were murdered last year by a knife or weapon. 82% of homicides with teenage victims included a knife or bladed weapon, according to the latest stats from the Office for National Statistics. Here at the Safety Centre we are working to be part of the solution, and encourage all parents and carers to attend our Zoom workshops to help you begin conversations about this essential topic with your children. Assistant Attorney General Amy L. Solomon joined healthcare executives, researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and advocates on Feb. 27. in New York City at the 5th annual Gun Violence Prevention Forum. Hosted by Northwell Health, the forum focused on building and harnessing momentum to address gun violence as a public health emergency. She discussed the vital role of healthcare institutions in implementing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022, particularly focusing on hospital-based violence intervention programs (#HVIPs). With an estimated 50,000 ER visits for gun-related injuries annually, scaling up these programs nationwide is crucial for creating safer communities. One-fifth of recent grantees under OJP’s Community Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative, a historic federal grant program funded in part through BSCA, are implementing hospital-based violence interventions as part of their strategy. OJP’s Office for Victims of Crime also supports training and technical assistance, delivered by The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention, to enhance services to victims by strengthening the infrastructure and quality of hospital-based programs. AAG Solomon noted the need to scale up HVIPs in hospitals across the nation, which see an estimated 50,000 emergency room visits for gun-related injuries each year. #GunViolencePrevention #SaferCommunities #PublicHealth | Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eNh89CFD
