🌍 Building Walkable Communities: Why It Matters & What’s Next 🌍 Did you know that only 11% of Americans live in highly walkable areas? Walkability impacts our health, environment, and community connectivity—making it essential for thriving neighborhoods. Thanks to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, $6.1 billion is now available to create walkable communities across the U.S., encouraging safer, more accessible places to walk, bike, and connect. Key funding initiatives include ✅ Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) - $5 billion in grants for projects that improve pedestrian safety with sidewalks, crosswalks, and more. ✅ Reconnecting Communities Pilot - $1 billion to remove or modify barriers and reconnect communities separated by past infrastructure. ✅ Complete Streets - Formula grants to support multimodal planning at state and metro levels. Walkability is more than sidewalks; it’s about connecting people to daily destinations, improving health, and boosting local economies. At the Partnership, we’re excited to support and promote these transformative initiatives. Together, let’s step forward toward more walkable communities! 🏙️ #Walkability #Infrastructure #CommunitySafety #UrbanPlanning #HealthyCommunities #SaferCleveland

Great places are comprised of details that are perceptible only at the human scale. Still, cities chase over-scaled, single purpose projects with big price tags and debunked financial returns. The best communities think big and implement small. #urbanism #infrastructure https://lnkd.in/eki7grSU

Revitalizing Abandoned Infrastructure: The High Line Effect and Equitable Public Spaces in the US • Inspired by the success of New York City's High Line, cities across the United States are transforming abandoned infrastructure into public spaces, driving economic revitalization and community well-being. • The High Line's popularity, however, led to gentrification and displacement in surrounding neighborhoods, highlighting the need for equity in infrastructure reuse projects. • Equity-led projects, such as Miami's Underline, Houston's Buffalo Bayou Park, Philadelphia's Rail Park, and Washington, D.C.'s 11th Street Bridge Park, prioritize community engagement, affordable housing, and workforce development to mitigate displacement and uplift underserved communities. • The Underline focuses on preserving affordable housing and honoring local identities through community-driven design and programming. • Buffalo Bayou Park reconnects divided communities, providing green spaces and recreational opportunities while prioritizing racial equity in planning and workforce opportunities. • The Rail Park celebrates local cultures, maintains industrial character, and employs strategies to counteract gentrification pressures. 🌿🏙️🌿🌳 #UrbanRenewal #CommunitySpaces #SustainableCities #OutdoorOpenSpaces #LandscapeDesign Good Read: Article about the topic; Full Story https://lnkd.in/gj8Nqu2J

A shout out to all friends and Members who live, work and holiday in the Shoalhaven *** A great chance for 5-minure advocacy *** The draft Shoalhaven AT strategy is on exhibition until Sunday 29th September. https://lnkd.in/gkkcg4XV The strategy updates and builds on 2 decades of previous work to deliver new paths, pedestrian crossings and cycleway infrastructure across the region. It combines an updated Pedestrian Access Mobility Plan (PAMP) and Bike Plan with new strategic context that refers to important changes in thinking around movement and place, speed limits and walkable neighbourhoods. It is a long and detailed document and quite different to those produced by other councils. 900 (!) proposed pedestrian and cycleway projects are ranked based on new selection criteria. These are listed in the appendices. Head to the survey for quick links to all the tables. https://lnkd.in/gFxr49YY There is a high-level summary of the priority projects in Section 12 starting on Page 199. This is recommended reading! Council clearly sets out that a common-sense approach is needed to delivering paths within budget – and not everything can meet current best-practice: “The challenge council faces, due to its size and the existing backlog of flood and fire damage is significant. However, bringing the plan in line with the State Government’s vision for walking, bike riding and personal mobility will help us to apply for vital grants to help fund our projects,” says City Futures Director, Coralie McCarthy. It's great to see three Liveable/Low Traffic Neighbourhoods being made permanent in Bath and North East Somerset - well done to everyone involved. With construction costs soaring and local authority budgets under increasing pressure, plus environmental considerations where traditional materials are concerned, we need to look to schemes which provide more, for less. High-value corridor schemes providing gold-plated segregated cycle infrastructure may be fantastic, and much-needed, but they are increasingly difficult to deliver to budget. Area-wide schemes such as LTNs might not be as sexy or as exciting, but they tick an awful lot of boxes: - create an ready-made network of safer, more pleasant streets to walk, wheel and cycle along - make side road junctions within the LTN far easier to negotiate - improve safety at the junctions of side roads with the boundary roads - improve noise and air quality levels - create opportunities for other uses of the street, whether that be pocket parks, SUDS, trees, play space or places for people to stop and interact - at the most basic level can be delivered with very minimal materials, so costs are relatively low - construction is relatively quick. The "only" real challenge is meaningful engagement, and navigating the inevitable misinformation that spreads virus-like on social media and in the local press. It's mad that LTNs have become so controversial, when really they're just another age-old traffic management technique. We need to push on championing the benefits and rolling LTNs out at pace in order to create more balanced, safer streets and to offer true travel choices to everyone.

Green infrastructure is no longer a luxury; it is a must

Shade, cooling, and the mental well being effects of green infrastructure are really important for walkability. And more people walking is a good thing for our health and transport systems. So with my Queensland Walks Incorporated Presidential hat on, I’m really pleased to see the release of this green infrastructure funding as part of the SEQ City Deal. Adding green infrastructure often doesn’t seem a big deal as an idea, but man alive most of us appreciate it when it’s in place, often without being conscious of what it brings. (Thanks to Rhianna George for bringing this to my attention!) https://lnkd.in/gWQxCj2J

2wThis is a veiled attack on car ownership. Many people cannot walk anywhere. The City of Grand Rapids has installed stupid parking meters in every small busines shopping area to discourage drivers from spending money at the shops.
