We are excited to announce that our Co-Founder, Paul Tracy, will be joining the groundbreaking Symposium on AI and Sign Language Interpreting. Hosted by the Advisory Group on AI and Sign Language Interpreting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, the event will take place on April 20-21. As a panelist, he will offer his perspective on this timely topic. The symposium itself is dedicated to fostering diverse Deaf leadership in the creation of regulations for Automated Interpreting by Artificial Intelligence (AIxAI), a crucial step towards building ethical and inclusive communication technologies. For more information and registration (both online and in-person) please visit www.deaf-futures.com. Interpreters attending can earn up to 1.05 CEUs from RID, BEI, or CCHI. Image Description: At the top of a blue square graphic, the text is centered as follows: "Hosted by the Advisory Group on AI and Sign Language Interpreting" followed by "AIxAI STANDARDS PANELIST" then "Symposium on AI and Sign Language Interpreting". Below this, a square photo of Paul Tracy, a smiling man with short hair and a blue suit, and his name. To the right of the photo, details about the Symposium. Beneath this, a dark blue textbox about CEUs available for interpreters. Finally, in the bottom third, there is a light teal background with Paul Tracy's brief bio.

#DeafSafeAI The Advisory Group (AG) on AI and Sign Language Interpreting has published a report on the results of a survey taken by users of ASL interpreting services. The findings reveal the need for regulation in three critical impact areas to ensure that any automated interpreting by artificial intelligence (AIxAI) is safe and ethical. The AG is an independent consortium of leaders and advocates for sign language interpreting across language services, industry, and academia. The AG, under the leadership of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc.(RID) and the Conference of Interpreter Trainer (CIT), has been building a partnership with the Interpreting SAFE AI Task Force for the past six months. Ethical Principles for Adopting Human-generated or AI Technology Language Interpretation Services. The responsible implementation of human-generated language interpretation and AI interpreting technology hinges on several key principles: explicit, opt-in informed consent, complete transparency, and strict adherence to ethical standards for each modality. Here’s how this can be put into practice in different settings: Medical Consultations: It’s of utmost importance that patients and healthcare providers are fully informed about the use of AI-assisted or human generated language interpretation. Healthcare providers should have a comprehensive understanding of each option's potential benefits and limitations. This knowledge equips them to provide the best possible care. Ensuring that participants are free to opt-in or opt-out guarantees that their consent is both informed and voluntary. Legal Settings: Clients should be thoroughly briefed on using human-generated or AI technology language interpreting services. This includes explaining how AI technology interpretation' function, the extent of human oversight, and the confidentiality measures in place. Understanding these details helps clients make well-informed decisions about the services they receive. Educational Institutions: When implementing AI language interpreting technology tools for functions like parent-teacher meetings or discussions about Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), it’s crucial to provide clear and comprehensive documentation on how these tools aid or create conflicts. The documentation, which promotes transparency and trust, ensures that parents and guardians are well-informed. It enables them to make educated decisions regarding the use of AI language-generated technology. Adopting these ethical principles makes sure that your chosen solutions will enhance communication without compromising all parties' integrity. For more infos visit Dialog One's website. SAFE AI created guidance for the use of AI in interpreting. It focuses on autonomy, safety and accountability for the end-user as well as transparency of the AI quality. #Interpretation #LanguageServices #Innovation
6/26: SAFE AI Task Force- Guidance (Ethical Principles) AI and Interpreting Services. Executive Summary: "This comprehensive guide describes fundamental sociolinguistic criteria for the safe, fair and ethical development and implementation of automatic interpreting products using artificial intelligence (AIxAI), also called machine interpreting. A broad cross-section of stakeholders participated in designing this Interpreting SAFE AI framework. This Guidance is for policymakers, tech companies/vendors, language service agencies/providers, interpreters, interpreting educators, and end-users. This Guidance establishes four fundamental principles as a durable, resilient and sustainable framework for the language industry. The four principles are drawn from ethical, professional practices of high and low resource languages, and are intended to drive legal protections and promote innovations in fairness and equity in design and delivery so that all can benefit from the potential of AI interpreting products."

This is one of the more fascinating finding from CSA Research's report on automated interpreting for the SAFE AI Task Force. Exposure to AI tools helps improve quality perceptions. #Interpretingservices #interpreters #languageaccess
New data reveals a clear trend: experience with AI-driven services like spoken interpreting, signed interpreting, captioning, subtitling, and transcription correlates with more positive perceptions of AI's capabilities. While the increase in positivity is moderate, the pattern is consistent – the more people use AI services, the higher they rate their quality. This insight from our 'Perceptions on Automated Interpreting' study could signal a turning point in the acceptance and integration of AI in language services. Very happy to see that our technologies are addressing societal challenges. Approximately 5% of the worlds population have hearing challenges. A portion of that segment, use sign language as a vehicle for communication. ➡ As you may know, sign languages ARE languages (!), and hence, you need to built dedicated corpus for each of them (No, an Irish will not understand a Hungarian). Generating a corpus for AI recognition and AI-based translation is time consuming. Back in 2020, we submitted with Zsolt Robotka, Mihaly Pinter, Aljosa Smolic, Rozenn Dahyot, Jonas Beskow, Simon Alexanderson, Juan Antonio Álvarez and Filippo Cugini a proposal to the European Commission on this topic, proposing generative AI for sign language avatars and AI-based recognition (in Irish, Hebrew, Hungarian and Italian languages). The proposal included edge R&D in areas spanning from networking technologies to hyper-realistic avatar generation. I think it was too early, definitely too early. 👨🎓 The project did not get funded, but the bug got in there, and we recognized at that time the relevance of some of today's hottest technologies in pop-culture. I am hence very happy to see a great paper coming out of that rejection by Marina Perea Trigo, Cecilia Botella, Miguel Ángel Martínez del Amor, Juan Antonio Álvarez and Luis Miguel Soria Morillo from Universidad de Sevilla in Spain, on a tool to generate synthetic datasets in Spanish Sign Language. The tool was used to generate a new dataset (synLSE) that is made available to the public for further research. 😊 You can find the whole paper available online here : https://lnkd.in/dN5ErNiD Accelerated Computing is here to help !
