Well it’s been a very busy and productive week this week: Attending 3 networking events: Grafters Super Groups 🔷Central 🔷Challengers International Women’s Day Brunch This was very inspirational with a speech from Emma Varnam of Tameside Council and other speakers talking about their journeys and what has inspired them to work in what was known as a male dominated environment. With working in the construction industry since 2006 I have had many journeys and obstacles but my passion and perseverance has made me what I am today. Apart from the networking it’s been busy at Diamond Decorators 🔹15 Quotes done ✔️ 🔹4 New projects won Current projects our teams are working on include: ✅ Near completion of 12 New-build Apartments & a 4-bed house ✅ 20 New-build 3-bed houses ✅ 35 New-build 2/3 bed houses -phase 1 complete ✅ Housing Association works This week our teams have been working hard on various projects in Salford and Stockport. Interviewed and taking on 4 new Apprentices from Tameside College Apprenticeships on a two week workplace trial with a view to employing as apprentices starting on Monday - we will be welcoming them onboard. To top the week off we have been shortlisted in the Tameside Business Awards for Small Business of the Year - which will be held at the end of this month. Year 3 of my Degree Apprenticeship done! Final semester ended with a 1:1 in my Design 202 module! 💪 Thankyou to my tutors Elham Valikhani and Elisavet Hasa for all your guidance and support this year. Have a read of the synopsis of my project below: 'REGENERA(TIZE)ATION' Regenerat(ion)e: (of a living organism) grow (new tissue) after loss or damage. Acclimatiz(ation)e: To change to suite different conditions of life. Many areas of London are witnessing a transformation of their social and economic landscapes. The process of gentrification inevitably causes repercussions that hinder the local ‘uniqueness’ and affordability of the  area. My investigation revolves around the transformation of the Deptford community to adapt to and thrive within the rapidly developing borough. The project is designed as an interpretation of contextual findings where a fusion of radial and linear geometry are used to maintain and enhance the rich history and key views of the site. The architecture embraces and responds to the immediate landscape to provide an experience for the traveller, audience and resident. 

It was a pleasure speaking with the team at Marlow Film Studios today to discuss the potential regional benefits & developments the project will mean for the area, including High Wycombe!   Commercial Benefits – Bringing new industry and visitors to the region will be beneficial for the whole area, especially High Wycombe as the nearest major town hub. Jobs & Apprenticeships – Infinite new opportunities for skilled workers and students looking to follow a career in the creative industries, particularly those within the Creative & Digital School of Studies at Bucks New University, a well-regarded specialism of the institution. Improved Transport Links - New bus routes from Wycombe to Maidenhead and locally around Marlow are a gamechanger and will improve accessibility in and around the area. Repurposed Land – As a former ‘tip’ housing the gravel extraction from the A404 Marlow Bypass build, the site will be repurposed in a way that brings positive benefits for the area – this planning application ‘ticks all the boxes’. The ripple effect of the Marlow Film Studios development can only be a good thing for High Wycombe - increasing footfall to the town and ultimately offering a huge benefit to town centre businesses, as well as economic growth of the region as a whole.

The skills shortage and main blocker in the Housing Industry isn’t necessarily where you think it is. Guy Burnett, Executive Director of Development at client So Resi, warns that an absence of new planners combined with bureaucracy and backlog is already leading to a lack of supply to match the urgent demand for affordable housing. The USGBC California Green Building Corps (GBC) represents a structured internship initiative that offers participants a valuable chance to gain practical experience, forge connections, and actively contribute to green building projects. The objective is to enhance the overall well-being, affordability, and sustainability of California for all its residents. Participants in this program extend their support to various projects, including the USGBC California Annual Environmental Justice Project, Green Schools microgrant initiatives, the California Native Plant Landscape Curriculum, as well as other chapter programs and member groups. Additionally, green building projects are identified from within architecture, engineering, and construction firms, sustainability consultancies, public agencies, and community partners. I've been hearing people talk about a skills shortage in our industry for years and years. Bit of a broken "record", yes record not CD or MP3 file, one of those circular vinyl black things, that's how many years. Interested in taking on a higher apprentice?   PlanBEE (Plan for Built Environment Education) is an industry driven higher apprenticeship, seeking employers from within the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sector across London. Organisations such as Cundall, have taken on three PlanBEE apprentices so far and are planning a further two for the September 2024 intake.   PlanBEE is a cost effective and innovative way to recruit and develop talented young people. PlanBEE has been designed by employers to meet industry needs, with a focus on leadership, economics, design, technology and production. It provides apprentices with the opportunity to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of multi-disciplinary roles and collaborative working across the AEC sector.   98% of PlanBEE graduates have progressed to permanent roles in the sector.   PlanBEE are looking for more companies to sponsor apprentices, companies such as cost consultants, architects, engineers, constructors, planners, managers, etc. in London and would be great to have you onboard. The Architecture Apprenticeship Handbook The RIBA has published ' The Architecture Apprenticeship Handbook,' featuring valuable tips from our very own Anastasija Kostileva: 1.     Connect early with peers to exchange ideas. 2.     Apply work skills to academic tasks with a strong research & design focus. 3.     Always ask questions! Our Director’s advice also features, highlighting the importance of business acumen for emerging professionals - exposure apprentices benefit from during their time in practice. As early adopters of the apprenticeship programme we are proud to be contributors to the handbook. Anastasija's journey has been a significant success for both her and the practice since she enrolled in an apprenticeship with The London South Bank University back in 2019. This was the early days of apprenticeships and felt like a leap of faith for both Anastasija and the practice; very few universities were offering them, there were no graduates to provide reassurance and they require a significant investment and four-year commitment. However, recognising apprenticeships pivotal role in making a career in architecture more accessible, Anastasija enrolled with the support of our Directors. “My goal was always to become an architect so I knew I couldn’t be a Part I forever but I really enjoyed working in practice. Real projects, real issues and colleagues there to support you. It motivated me and reinforced the idea that architecture is what I want to do. Doing my apprenticeship at Bell Phillips was my best professional decision so far. It was challenging, especially during lockdown, but my job provided stability and motivation. Whenever I doubted my university work, I remembered that I handle more complex tasks at work." This April marked a year since Anastasija qualified as an Architect and we are very proud of her journey to that long-desired (and deserved) title. Following in her footsteps, Architectural Assistant, Eleanor Hollis has recently enrolled in an apprenticeship scheme with the University of Cambridge whilst continuing her fantastic work with us here in Wapping. We are so thankful for the opportunity to have Pulaski Schools high school students working with us through the Youth Apprenticeship Program. We appreciate their commitment to Wood Tech Industries and are certain they will make a positive impact on our society in whatever vocation they choose to pursue. Mason Murray: "I like working with my hands and am thinking about doing something in construction. I like working with the team members because a lot of the jobs we do here (at Wood Tech) are with someone else." Trevor Daniels: "I like learning about all the different machines and working in a shop with the people (at Wood Tech Industries)." Mason Christensen: "I want to go into some sort of career in woodworking and learning about all the different types of machines has really helped me."
