When asked why is Clinical Supervision so important in my field and usually I provide a brief answer, but here is the answer! Clinical supervision is necessary for licensed counselors for several important reasons: 1. Professional Development: Supervision provides counselors with ongoing opportunities to improve their skills, deepen their understanding of clinical techniques, and stay current with new developments in the field. It encourages reflection on their practice and supports continuous learning. 2. All too often staff in clinical roles founder when it comes to managing the challenges of professional relationships. There is the expectation that because you have achieved seniority and maturity in your role that you’ve got this sorted. Yet the differences between your colleagues are immense. From disciplines, genders and generations, to cultures, personalities and egos, or individual perceptions and expectations. How can you possibly know how to approach all these variances between people, or even realise that you should? It’s no wonder that attempts to resolve challenges may not go to plan. It’s not until something really starts to affect you that you might realise it’s time to do something about it. Whether that’s doubting your professional abilities, reduced confidence or self-esteem, or feeling undervalued or disrespected. Ruminating over previous events only serves to reinforce your beliefs and anxieties about the situation, so what can you do? You could ask for help! I should write a blog post on the role of supervision in therapy: what it is and is not, how it differs from the notion of supervisors we expect from "I demand to speak to your supervisor" retail contexts (or should, at least). I have Very Strong Opinions on what constitutes good versus not-good supervision. And because I also practice what I preach in terms of a belief that it's NOT just beneficial for students and "qualifying therapists" (our field's version of "resident physicians", or "doctors in training"), this morning I've just signed on with a new supervisor of my own. It's a significant part of ongoing professional development to find people who can help see into our general blindspots as practitioners, as well as help hone specific therapeutic skills--in my case, deepening my work with the IFS model--and it's an aspect of our professional development that, in my opinion as both a therapist, a client of therapy, a supervisor, and once again a client of supervision, that should NOT stop as we advance our careers. I have been very privileged to work with some excellent (and very patient!) supervisors; they definitely set strong models for what I hope I bring to my own supervisees.

There are two types of "go-to" professionals. Type 1: early-career professionals who are proving themselves You've showed up at 110% in all of your training doing all of the scut work and all of the voluntary things that show you're serious. You absolutely say yes when asked to do things because you want to be a team player. And you're chalking all of this up to additional learning that will help you serve your people better. Type 2: established professionals who people depend on You've been doing this for a while and are familiar with the system within which you work. You know what the limitations are and, quite frankly, you're usually the one making up for these. You go above and beyond for your patients and clients, not for recognition, but out of your own standard of excellence.
