Hello everyone,
Recently, Victoria’s Secret & Co. held the Victoria Secret Fashion Show after returning from a six-year hiatus, given its troubled and disturbing revelations and crimes committed by the owner of the billion-dollar business.
But you know that it was promised that the new version of the show would celebrate every type of woman with its new vision, but the reality couldn't be further from this.
Not a single disabled model or a model of a different size other than mainstream known faces, which are already popular, were showcased on its runway. Moreover, their styling was lousy signaling just inclusion without any attention or care to curate their looks.
Not a single drag queen that specializes in 360 degrees of styling and makeup and creating a persona on stage.
If we look at the show from an intersectional lens given its wide press coverage and the immense social media spotlight on who walked the runway, who wore what and its styling, which I found particularly themeless and uninspired, the show was a disappointment.
And if you say that inclusivity can't be made beautiful in lingerie, I challenge you to say this after watching Rihanna's Savage x Fenty Show; the creativity and styling ooze in every frame of the show. Available to stream on Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios
Since I was a teen, I always wondered if women who are celebrated on runways and in print on billboards had to look a certain way, be a fixed size, and be flawless with no cellulite, thigh gaps, wide busts and butts but tiny waists and many more such unrealistic beauty standards enforced in digital and print media.
This is for every woman, young girl and child who feels insecure of how she looks; every digital and print editorial is highly digitally altered, photoshopped and now, A.I have entered the chat to even thrust this obsession with perfection to the extreme. When I saw a 10-year-old do an anti-aging skin routine with my own eyes, my mind went blank and I delved deeper into why this is happening, the i_weigh movement and Jameela Jamil with her panel of experts opened by eyes to the insidious way women are conditioned to feel insecure as we will purchase less products if we feel secure, it all circles back to money.
Even the recent way of celebrity beauty brands exploding is because of this reason, but some founders like Rihanna Savage X Fenty deliver on what they promise while others just ride the wave of "treating women's bodies as trends.".
