All around Australia, artists are sparking social change, working with communities to tell their stories, tackle big issues and create common ground. You may be familiar with Community Arts and Cultural Development (CACD), a specialist art form where professional artist facilitators work with communities to co-create projects with purpose. However, many Australians are not. Research shows that of all the artforms, our population has a particularly limited understanding of the benefits of CACD. This new resource launching today collates a selection of local case studies to showcase the inspiring work led by CACD artists. As Australia grapples with a civic crisis, their work has never been more needed. Head to the resource to see why we think CACD projects deserve a bigger profile, and dive into: - How Milk Crate Theatre used devised theatre to facilitate social inclusion for people at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness - How All The Queens Men curated a lavish party to facilitate pride, celebration and visibility for LGBTIQ+ elders - How Carclew addressed isolation amongst youth in regional South Australia through facilitating the opportunity for emerging young writers to develop their own monologues - How Jiva Parthipan and the NSW SERVICE FOR THE TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION OF TORTURE AND TRAUMA SURVIVORS (STARTTS) engaged with place-making and cross-cultural understanding through a creative experience along the Georges River in Casula NSW Spoiler: the impacts are profound. Click the link below and scroll through the digital resource: 'When Art Sparks Change'. Resource: https://lnkd.in/gsyRb-Cq Thank you to Creative Australia for their assistance, the practitioners who participated in the creation of this resource and to the many partners involved in each of the projects profiled.

On May 7, 1986, President Ronald Reagan issued proclamation 5472, recognizing the day as National #BarrierAwarenessDay, and calling upon Americans to create events and programs that would contribute to removing obstacles for people with disabilities. Today, we're reminded to continue to work to eliminate social, legal, economic, and physical barriers that confront individuals with disabilities. Not only do we try to eliminate physical barriers everyday through our #accessibility solutions, with our non-profit AmrampCARES we also hope to help more people with financial barriers that may keep them from gaining the access they need, even to their own homes. One way to fund more community and affordable housing is for rental property investors to pay commercial property taxes. They currently pay private property taxes despite being a for-profit business activity. The additional taxes can be used to fund more affordable housing and social housing infrastructure.
Australia’s housing crisis is dramatically reshaping the lives and hopes of young people, highlighted in a new report launched today in Canberra as part of World Homeless Day. The research, developed by Swinburne University of Technology and funded by YWCA Australia, provided a platform for young women and gender diverse people from around Australia to share their housing experiences and aspirations. https://lnkd.in/gKdQ7kAC

Thank you Ubele Initiative for convening a community conversation on Monday about the racist and Islamophobic violence that has threatened the safety and dignity of our communities. The call for more and sustained investment in grassroots and community-based organisations echoes messages set out in https://lnkd.in/e94-skQ3 But it is a message that still needs to be more widely understood and responded to. Research shows that most funders see racial justice work as ‘too risky’; many shy away from supporting work on root causes; and there is very limited long-term commitment to substantive racial justice strategies or to grass-roots community organising: 'Funding Justice 2 analysed over £950 million worth of grants. It found that just 5.7% of UK foundation giving in 2021/22 went towards work to tackle injustice [and] 0.3% …. went towards building people power through organising. This is despite growing recognition that “community organising and local power building is simultaneously one of the best and one of the most under-resourced mechanisms we have to shift power to and secure just outcomes for (and with) communities”.’ (Baring, E. and Cracknell, J. (2023) Funding Justice: An analysis of social justice grantmaking in the UK, 2021-2022, Civic Power Fund.) There is also a risk in these moments that too many individual funders turn to their grantees to ask what would be most helpful, at a time when they are responding to crisis. We encourage funders to tap into wider conversations: ➡ Migration Exchange (MEX) convened people identifying as having lived experience of the migration system and working in the migration field to share their thoughts and demands for change: https://lnkd.in/e86EMiBg ➡ Fozia Irfan OBE's key points following a call attended by over 50 trusts & foundations: https://lnkd.in/e3qHNXZg

Can you help us to tackle homelessness? This month, and the next, and the next? We're a social enterprise and employ all of our tour guides. Raising funds can be tough because we're always asking people to part with money that is stretched in so many different directions. But now, people can make little monthly donations on a regular basis and that is huge news for us. 💚 A fiver a month pays for training materials for a new guide 💚 £10 a month pays for a venue for guide training 💚 £20 a month pays for new guides to explore their city and hear from other museum, gallery and tour guides on how they run their tours. If you or your business can make a small regular donation like this, it helps so much and we'll be excited to share those updates with you as we help more people across the UK impacted by homelessness. https://lnkd.in/eCsShAHw #crowdfunder #fundraising #socialenterprise #tacklinghomelessness.

The Surrey Cultural Strategy says: 'We will tap into creativity to improve the quality of life & wellbeing of our most vulnerable' I read a lovely end of grant report today from Head2Head Theatre that epitomises this ethos. Funding from Community Foundation for Surrey's Tandridge Community Fund enabled a drama facilitator skilled in Makaton to carry out drama workshops with young people with a wide range of disabilities. The sessions entitled My Money Matters introduced participants to money management, an important aspect of independent living. Further sessions enabled participants to learn new skills in drama and improve their self-confidence. One participant, a selective mute, recorded a message that they played to the audience, demonstrating improved confidence and assurance. One participant acted as compere, introducing each performance to the audience. This gave reassurance to another participant who, in the last session, followed up the introduction with a few words of their own. We are hoping to be able to launch a new Fund in 2025 that will enable us to support more life-changing creative initiatives like this one, get in touch if you would like to support.
