Leadership | Driving Operational Excellence, Performance and Sustainability at National Grid
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 '𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐛 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭' 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲? My 'lightbulb moment' came while working in the construction industry, where I became aware of the environmental impact of our practices. This realisation drove me to pursue IEMA qualifications, ultimately becoming a Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP). These qualifications not only expanded my understanding but also enabled me to implement practical sustainability measures into everyday operations, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). As Chief Operating Officer (COO), I've had the opportunity to directly influence how we operate and to embed sustainable practices into our core business model. My role involves overseeing all aspects of operations, from procurement to logistics, which has given me a unique position to drive meaningful change. By rethinking our approach to resource management, reducing waste, and encouraging our subcontractors to adopt greener practices, I've been able to make sustainability an integral part of our work culture. I've also shared insights and experiences through various blog articles and posts, highlighting practical ways SMEs can embrace sustainability. My focus has been on providing actionable advice that smaller companies can realistically implement, helping them understand that even small steps can lead to significant positive outcomes. These articles aim to demystify sustainability and present it as a series of achievable milestones rather than an overwhelming challenge.
