At last!! After always heading North to visit farm businesses, today for the first time I ventured South of home! It involved a trip across the water to the IOW to visit two farm businesses as part of the Soil Association Exchange service. The Soil Association Exchange service supports farmers and the way they do business. Metrics are robustly measured across impact areas such as soil health, carbon, biodiversity, animal welfare , water and social. New metrics include Soil Cover %, Food Production and Nutrient Balances. The holistic farm measurement tool includes a package of tailored recommendations and expert advice, with which farmers are able to unlock the financial benefits of regenerative land use and sustainable farming practices. Soil Association Exchange is accessible to all farmers, regardless of their type, scale of operation or location. It was encouraging to discover today, farm businesses growing and producing food for their local community and meeting their nature-positive and circular economy ambitions. #naturepositive #climatesmartagriculture #circulareconomy #sustainablefarming

Did you know that access to fresh water isn’t just essential for communities, but for their livestock too? In Maasai culture, cattle are central to their way of life, providing food, income, and cultural identity. L Squared’s Tova Water project ensures that these animals, so vital to daily life, have access to fresh water, just like this newly built water trough you see here. Clean water helps keep cattle healthy and productive, which in turn supports families and the local economy. When you support water projects like this, you’re directly investing in a sustainable future for both people and their animals. #WaterIsLife #MaasaiCulture #FreshWaterForAll #SustainableFarming #TovaWaterProject

Exploring Grass-Based Food Systems Grass-based food systems are transforming the landscape of sustainable agriculture. By allowing livestock to graze on natural forage, these systems enhance soil health, promote biodiversity, and reduce carbon footprints. Not only do they offer a more humane approach to animal welfare, but they also yield meat and dairy products rich in nutrients. For farmers, grass-based systems can mean lower feed costs and access to premium markets. For consumers, it means healthier food choices. Let’s support and grow this eco-friendly approach to farming that brings unique strengths to our tables and contributes to a more sustainable future. #Sustainability #Agriculture #GrassFed #EcoFriendly #Healthliving

https://lnkd.in/dDfNMgtn At Star South Fruits, we’re proud to support our growers in meeting vital market requirements, such as the LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) certification – a key step towards sustainable farming practices. As part of this journey, we recently hosted an insightful session at Blyderverwacht Farm in Wellington, where Helani Briers from The Travelling Bee School shared her fascinating knowledge about honey bees and their critical role in agriculture. The talk offered a deeper understanding of sustainable pollination and its importance in farm management. It was a privilege to collaborate with local farmers and the agricultural community on this meaningful initiative, working together to ensure farms meet both local and international food safety, social, and environmental standards. From the queen bee’s incredible story to the collective efforts of 40,000 “working girls,” Helani’s session was not only educational but also inspiring—reminding us of the vital connection between nature and farming. We remain committed to helping our growers achieve their goals and promote sustainable practices that ensure a brighter future for agriculture. #SustainableFarming #LEAF #PollinationMatters #StarSouthFruits #FarmManagement #TheTravellingBeeSchool

Today, on World Environment Day, let's talk about plotting a greener future for our continent - specifically, let’s talk about #treeplanting. While tree planting is often championed for environmental benefits, we need to be smarter about our reforestation efforts. First and foremost, we must plant the right trees - think quality over quantity. Introducing non-native species can disrupt local ecosystems while planting the right trees, strategically, can make a much bigger difference. We must also think of the trees’ life post photo-op :-) . It’s important to remember that planting a tree is a long-term commitment, many tree species take over 20 years to grow to maturity! Pick a location that will allow the seedling to thrive. Many tree-planting initiatives fail due to inadequate watering and even inadequate protection from livestock. It is also very important to engage local communities in corporate tree-planting initiatives and provide training on proper planting and maintenance techniques. This fosters ownership and ensures long-term sustainability. All in all, happy #WorldEnvironmentDay folks! Be kind to mama earth.
