The four-year anniversary of Paul Malin Consultancy has just passed and it has been quite a journey. Despite having survived Covid without a sniff thankfully, there have been some other notable happenings along the road. Firstly, writing off 2 laptops – thankfully they were backed up. Secondly, far less travelling by car, train and plane. And yet I deeply missed meeting people. But we have the internet, TEAMs and Zoom and I still speak to clients and advisors regularly. Thirdly, not sure there was a third thing. Its not the first time I have run a successful business. If you want to stay in business, you have to learn from your mistakes. And quickly. In my opinion, money isn’t everything, people are. Money allows you to fulfil your ambitions and dreams. But what is important to me is that I still love what I do and get so much satisfaction from helping clients get a better outcome from tax investigations. How has your journey been so far? What are your future ambitions and dreams?

From Eric Eicher, co-founder and president of RightHand: How do you define "professional development?" Most of us define it as what we do to help ourselves improve our craft and skills. But as I was thinking about RightHand’s upcoming seventh anniversary in January 2025, I thought about the team of professionals who’ve helped our profession develop–four experts whose experience and insights have fueled our own growth and progress. This group of four– Aaron P. Smith, Karen Young, Kiahna Davis, and Matthew Hatoway–have provided everything from legal services and tax strategy to insurance protection and financial guidance. Their business cards list their jobs as Legal, Finance, Insurance, or Taxes, but their greatest impact is driving us toward rethinking how we operate as an agency. Those discussions pushed us to think about how the decisions we make in the present set us up to kick ass in the future. They didn’t make assumptions, instead they made us talk about our “whys” and who we want to be, both today and five years from now. This team has helped build RightHand in all areas of business with trust, transparency, and honesty. And we’re grateful for how they shape our financial foundation, and how they help us invest in our people, process, and work. Most importantly, though, this team has shown me that time truly is money. Everything we do at RightHand has a purpose beyond us: we want to elevate our clients and guide them toward success. Aaron, Karen, Kiahna, and Matt do that for us, and because of them, I’ve expanded my own definition of professional development.

This year, one of my businesses hit $10 million in annual revenue. I’ve been asking myself a big question this week about how to best celebrate this major achievement. Or, honestly, even if I should. Should I celebrate publicly? My looping thought: “will it jinx me, if I do?” Another looping thought: “it’s crass/uncouth [whatever] to celebrate financial milestones” Should I keep it quiet and just go on about my day and roll into this next year without mentioning it? “If I say something publicly, I’ll be targeted for attack” “My clients will think all I care about is the money, when the reality is that we got here because of how much I care about them” Or, something else? Through all of this, I’ve decided that celebrating publicly is the way to go because so few businesses ever hit this milestone, and even fewer that are led by women. And, as I teach the Journey to Financial Liberation this year … I need to live it. So, I’m taking my own medicine and celebrating, even though it’s scary to do it. New Law Business Model hit $10M/year in revenue! 🎉 This week for those subscribed to my emails I’ll harvest the lessons and share them with you. Want to get on the list? See the link in the comments. The first lesson to harvest from this $10M year is the lesson of “Being Afraid and Doing It Anyway” The practice of moving toward my fear, and saying yes to what scares me, has repeatedly served me. I can promise you this: If you find the things that scare you, that you want to run from. And run toward them, as fast, and as hard as you can. You can truly accomplish anything you want most. ANYTHING! $10M revenue? You can do that in the next 5 years, if you want it. Here’s how I know: 2.5 years ago, we were about to run out of money, not make payroll, and I was in the midst of replacing my entire executive team due to a series of poor decisions on my part. Now, just 2.5 years later, we’ve made it. An amazing executive team. Profitable for the first time in a couple of years. Phenomenal clients we get to serve, and their results are exponentially impactful due to the hundreds or thousands of clients they serve as they repeatedly are named “best of” in their communities with double and triple digit growth in their firms. Even an offer to sell the company on the table, but way too low, so not taking it. We got here because I turned toward the fear 2.5 years ago, and even though it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done … So, that’s lesson #1: Be Afraid and Do It Anyway Tomorrow, I’ll be back with lesson #2. If this lesson of “Be Afraid and Do It Anyway” touches something in you, I’d love to hear it. Let me know in the comments. To your eyes wide open life, Ali Katz PS. If you want my support, mentorship, guidance to be afraid and do it anyway, join me for my Practical Magic workshop on 1/11 - a half day, 3-year strategic vision planning process that has been integral to my ability to get here.
