In a significant milestone for India’s startup ecosystem, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has recognized 1,40,803 entities as startups under the Startup India initiative, launched on 16th January 2016. The initiative, aimed at nurturing innovation and encouraging investments in startups, has seen substantial growth across the nation. As of 30th June 2024, Maharashtra leads with 25,044 recognized startups, followed by Karnataka with 15,019 and Delhi with 14,734. Other notable states include Uttar Pradesh (13,299), Gujarat (11,436), Tamil Nadu (9,238), Haryana (7,385), and Telangana (7,336). India marks 1.4 lakh registered startups. As of June 30, 2024, according to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). In a statement to the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jitin Prasada, provided a breakdown of startups registered in different states and union territories. Maharashtra leads with 25,044 startups, making it the top state for startup registrations in India. Karnataka follows with 15,019 registered startups, while Delhi is close behind with 14,734. The number of startups has crossed 1.4 lakh. There were only 400 startups in India in 2016. Now that number has crossed 1.4 lakh. Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasad recently gave a written reply in the Rajya Sabha regarding the development of start-up companies in India. It says, “Maharashtra has the maximum number of 25,044 start-up companies. Karnataka is at the 2nd position with 15,019 startups and Delhi is at the 3rd position with 14,734 startups. 4th is Uttar Pradesh (13,299) and 5th is Gujarat (11,436). In 2016, the central government launched the 'Start Up India' scheme to encourage start-up companies. Incubation centers for start-up companies, the central government has taken forward the projects with an investment of Rs.10 thousand crores. The central government is creating various frameworks for startups to reduce their dependence on foreign investments and make domestic investments available. Due to this, the number of start-ups in India is increasing many times,” he said.
