When I ask “what’s the purpose of an IPO?”, I get a lot of standard answers. Almost every one of them starts with “it is a liquidity event for founders.” I've come to believe that's not it - and it doesn't just apply to IPOs... A long time ago, I learned that indexing on the exit creates waste. Wait. What about all that “begin with the end in mind” stuff? 👉 The purpose of an IPO is to generate more capital than you can accumulate from bootstrapping or traditional investment sources *so that* you can replicate a validated success at a significantly larger scale. 🧠 Do you notice how your brain makes a shift when you read that? It moves from “how founders finish” to “how the company grows”. You make very different decisions based on which one of those you're focusing on. Sure, it can be a liquidity event for a founder - but that’s not the purpose. 🤷♂️ If you’re not building for an IPO, who cares? Here are some questions I’m thinking about a lot these days. "I think the IPO market is open. The problem is no one wants to go public right now in advance of an election in the US." In Ep 69 of Micro Podcast, I continued a conversation with Jason Corsello, Founder and General Partner at Acadian Ventures. While the investment market may be better than it was, it's not great. So what is the biggest issue? From Jason's perspective, the problem is liquidity. Investors haven't been getting their money back from exits of these businesses. The IPO market has been somewhat frozen. And no one is making any big moves before the election in the US. The good news is that once we get past this milestone things look favorable for 2025. Jason is predicting that regardless of which administration wins office, there will be changes at the FTC that will create a more favorable environment for M&A.
