My eyes roll hard to the back of my head when I'm forced to participate in "team-building" activities, and I know I'm not the only one. BUT Towner does team-building activities every week, and because of everyone's loathing of said forced interactions, our activities are very much outside of the box. I often think what are the best ways to keep your team motivated. ✔️ Active Listening: Listen to your team members' concerns, ideas, and feedback. ✔️ Personal Check-ins: Regularly check in with each team member individually to discuss not only work-related issues but also their personal well-being. ✔️ Supportive Environment: Create an environment where team members feel safe to express their thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment or retribution. ✔️ Inclusive Decision-Making: Involve your team in decision-making processes to make them feel valued and part of the larger picture. ✔️ Empathetic Leadership: Lead by example by demonstrating empathy in your actions and decisions. While organizing team outings, providing good performance ratings, and offering trainings are important, embedding empathy into daily interactions can create a more motivated, loyal, and cohesive team. Being a friend to your team highlights a fundamental truth about human relationships in the workplace: people are more motivated and engaged when they feel genuinely cared for and understood.
