When we think of systems thinking, we tend to focus on the ‘system’ part, on the tools and methodologies to map a system, to understand its dynamics, and to identify leverage points for intervention.
But an equally important, and less talked about part, is the thinking in systems thinking. What are the thinking skills needed to make the most of systems thinking tools and practices?
Well established systems thinkers have pondered and addressed this question. I wanted to look for an answer elsewhere. Away from systems academia.
Lucky for me, I met Scott Marshall Brandon and got to learn about his rich body of work on imagination, imaginative thinking and creative action. His work is a reminder that imagination is not a luxury, but a necessity for being able to live with complexity and tackle wicked problems.
Our conversations, and Scott’s fascinating work, inspired me to incorporate elements of artistic inquiry in my own work, in my workshops and work with multidisciplinary teams.
I’m grateful to Scott for sharing his insights in my audio series, 𝑨 𝑴𝒊𝒍𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝑴𝒚 𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒆𝒔, a series of stories by systems thinkers and change-makers that aims to inspire you to find your inner systems intelligence. You can listen to Scott’s story through the link in the comments.
Here’s to a bright, creative and fulfilling 2025!
