It's often the solution to what ails you. But for most of us, it's nearly impossible to do. Imagine your child is playing outside and gets hurt. By the time they get inside, they're screaming and marred in blood. You have no idea what, specifically, has happened, but you know that something is terribly wrong and you need to fix the problem immediately. Before you can fix the problem, however, you need to diagnose the issue to see what has transpired. You ask them to sit still so you can gain a better understanding of the problem that you're dealing with, but instead, your child: - Refuses to sit still and is bouncing all over the place - Pulls away from you each time you get close - Does not adhere to your simple instructions and fights back It'd be pretty hard for you, the parent, to relieve their pain when the child refuses to sit still and listen, wouldn't it? The same is true when Christ tries to heal us. When we're in pain, many of us cry out, complain, and want nothing more than what we're enduring to be alleviated. However, we refuse to be still, pull away from God, and don't listen to what He's telling us to do. How can He help when we're a bad patient? We've all been here before. It's absolutely terrifying, isn't it? You go to a crowded mall with your small child, and when you look down, your son or daughter is gone. You reach for your phone, but it's not where you thought it was. Your entire life is on the device and you have no idea where you last left it. You go to make a payment online, but your wallet is not in its usual place. You were all over town today and your mind is racing about all of the places you may have left it. When you're separated from something that is important to you, you are immediately filled with anxiety, worry, panic, and dred. The same is true with God. In life, you're either in the valley, just out of the valley, or soon to be in the valley. When we find ourselves in that deep, dark place, it's easy to think that we're separated from God. That He does not see us, hear us, care about us, or love us. According to Scripture, nothing could be more wrong. Nothing, absolutely nothing, can separate you from the love of your Heavenly Father, and I pray that is a truism that you take to heart today. In many discussions about the Apostle Paul, his holistic approach to ministry often goes unnoticed. Yet, it's an aspect with applicable insights for pastorship today. Paul wasn't just focused on people's spiritual well-being. Instead, he took the time to understand their physical, emotional, and relational needs too. A quintessential example of this is found in his letters to the Corinthians. There, Paul guides them not just regarding their spiritual struggles but offers practical advice on relationships and financial management as well. So, how can leaders embody this holistic approach in their ministies? 1. **Be present.** Get to know people beyond their spiritual lives. Understand their dreams, goals, and challenges. 2. **Meet people where they are.** Shape your programs and outreaches to cater to various lifestyles and interests. 3. **Address the whole person.** Besides addressing spiritual issues, confront emotional, relational, and physical aspects too. 4. **Build relationships.** Take time to form genuine bonds with people.
