Our Lead Designer, Paul, reviews one of his favourite recent reads - Now try something weirder: How to Keep Having Great Ideas and Survive in the Creative Business by Michael Johnson. Here's what Paul had to say: Michael (of Johnson Banks Design) draws upon his experience to offer over 200 brilliant hints and tips to help graphic designers navigate the industry, stay relevant, find new ideas and share some design secrets. The one-page, one-tip structure of the book makes it easy to dip in and out of, or return to time and again. I found the book insightful and in some way it validated my 20+ years in the industry. More importantly, I feel the book is ideal for younger designers, communicating the notion that design is far more than a vocation; design must be lived to be successful. It’s refreshing to pick up a design book so far removed from the glossy portfolio style. Instead, Michael offers genuine industry insight with a fantastic level of honesty and transparency. There is a very reassuring feel to the book, akin to sitting with your favourite tutor from art school as you are drip-fed nuggets of wisdom. I’ll certainly be passing this book on to the young team at Creatomatic. #design #designer #graphicdesign #branding #designagency #designbook #bookreview

Book cover design isn't just about making a book look pretty—it's about telling a story at first glance. 📖✨ As a graphic designer specializing in book covers, I understand the crucial role these designs play in attracting readers and setting the tone for the entire reading experience. A well-crafted cover can capture the essence of a story, spark curiosity, and entice readers to pick up the book and dive in. It's the first impression a reader gets, and it can make all the difference in whether they decide to explore further or move on to the next title on the shelf. In today's crowded publishing landscape, standing out is more important than ever. A compelling book cover can make a book jump off the shelf—or leap out of a webpage—and grab a reader's attention amidst the sea of options. It's not just about aesthetics; it's about communicating the essence of the book in a way that resonates with the target audience. That's why investing in professional book cover design is crucial for authors and publishers alike—it's the key to making a memorable impact and connecting with readers on a deeper level. 🚀 #BookCoverDesign #GraphicDesign #FirstImpressions

Don’t judge a book by its cover… or should you? → In the creative world, first impressions do matter — especially when it comes to design! → The book might be a masterpiece, but it’s the cover design that grabs attention and invites curiosity. → A graphic designer’s job isn’t just to make things “look good” but to craft visuals that tell a story, spark emotions, and make a lasting impact. →This funny image reminds us of the unsung heroes — designers who work behind the scenes to make that first impression count! 😄 →Give your point of view on this topic in the comments... #GraphicDesign #CreativityMatters #VisualStorytelling #AttentionToDetail #LinkedInHumor

🌟 One of my favourite quotes that inspires me daily is: 'In a world where you can be anything, be kind.' This simple yet powerful reminder guides my approach at Connect Design and in life. What quotes or books inspire you? I love looking at book design for clues as to why the designers chose the fonts, layout, and colors that they did. A good book has visual elements that elevate and enrich the reader experience. They will be things that organize the book better, make it easier to navigate, create an easy to follow path, aligning with the expectations of the reader. Some things that contribute to this are: 👀 the readability of the text 🦕 the size of the fonts 📖the addition of a table of contents outlining front and back matter 📕the header and footer info ✨ and the cover and back cover layout I’m highlighting the book below for these items in an upcoming blog post. Currently designing book covers alongside doing editorial review for my client. It’s such a sweet experience to work closely with my client to bring her ideas to life through design.
