I've had the privilege of working in the supply chain industry for quite some time now, experiencing a variety of setups and inventory management systems. One key lesson I've learned is the importance of keeping an open mind about an organisation's processes. At first, it was challenging for me because I wanted to rely on what I knew best. From my learning, I still adopt the best practices I have taken from my experiences. Trust me, sometimes you witness true miracles – 'hii ni maajabu'! when working in operations and you have to make sure things flow. Today, I want to share some insights on inventory tracking using UIDs versus SKUs and the scenarios where each is most effective. Tracking Inventory Using UID High-Value or Unique Items: For items like electronics or machinery, UIDs offer precise control and traceability. Warranty and Service Management: UIDs ensure you can track each item’s history for warranties or after-sales service. Quality Control and Recalls: In critical industries like pharmaceuticals or food, UIDs help manage recalls and trace issues to specific batches. Theft Prevention: Tracking with UIDs helps in preventing theft by identifying each specific item. Detailed Reporting: When you need detailed reporting and analytics on individual item movements, UIDs are indispensable. Tracking Inventory Using SKU Standard Products: For mass-produced and identical items like clothing or packaged goods, SKUs simplify inventory management. Simpler Systems: Smaller operations benefit from the straightforward nature of SKU tracking. Retail Settings: In environments requiring quick and efficient processing of large volumes of inventory, SKUs are practical. Bulk Items: For items stored and sold in bulk, tracking by SKU is often more efficient. Embracing the right method of inventory tracking can transform your operations, leading to greater efficiency and accuracy. Keep an open mind and choose the approach that best fits your specific needs. After all, in the world of supply chain, flexibility and adaptability often lead to the most remarkable outcomes. At Softworks, we have the capability to handle both UIDs and SKUs simultaneously or individually, positioning ourselves as the best at what we do. Whether your needs are detailed tracking or streamlined inventory management, we've got you covered. #SupplyChain #InventoryManagement #UID #SKU #BestPractices #Efficiency #Softworks
