“we cannot create a future fit for our grandchildren with a system built by our grandparents.” Overall, the agreement of the Pact is a strong statement of countries’ commitment to the United Nations, the international system and international law. Leaders set out a clear vision of an international system that can deliver on its promises, is more representative of today’s world and draws on the energy and expertise of governments, civil society and other key partners. The Pact covers a broad range of issues including peace and security, sustainable development, climate change, digital cooperation, human rights, gender, youth and future generations, and the transformation of global governance. https://lnkd.in/gCjw_yYp

#MondayAlphabet J for ...cross-generational #JUSTICE ☘ Cross-generational justice refers to the principle of fairness and equity between different generations in economic and social policy decisions. It emphasizes the responsibility of current generations to ensure that their actions do not disproportionately disadvantage future generations. This concept is concerned with the sustainable management of resources, environmental protection, and the equitable distribution of wealth and opportunities over time. 📣 Cross-generational justice becomes particularly relevant in discussions about environmental sustainability, fiscal policy, and social security systems. For example, policies that incur significant debt might benefit the current generation but burden future generations with repayment. Similarly, actions leading to environmental degradation today can impose long-term costs on future populations. What were some of the broad #FundamentalRights concerns in 2023? The Fundamental Rights Report 2024 from the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights points to rising racism, and the wider impact of digitalisation and climate change that can lead marginalise societal groups. While acknowledging EU policies to address these inequalities, it calls for a multifaceted approach to help build a more inclusive EU. The ideological and political commitment to environmental regulations and social reform, including more economic equality, is relatively strong and often fueled by opportunism on the part of lobby groups and big corporations.
