TAPP, PATH’s new tap-and-go fare payment system, is now available in all PATH stations in both New York and New Jersey. This means you can TAPP into all stations using contactless credit/debit cards or smartphone digital wallets. To date, PATH riders have TAPPed to pay nearly 5 million times, marking a significant step forward in our system-wide rollout. PATH’s rollout of its new modern fare payment system comes as the ridership on the railroad returns from the nadir of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, the system served 50.5 million passengers, which was its highest ridership since pre-pandemic 2019 and a 19 percent increase over 2022’s total passenger volume. By requiring consumers to link their bank accounts, cashflow underwriting generates a nudge to enroll in autopay. This nudge has BIG EFFECTS on autopay + minimum payments. Based on a regression discontinuity design, the nudge accounts for half of all autopay enrollment, and shifting all consumers into autopay would double minimum payments.
