With 23% of the US population expected to be over 65 years old by 2054, it's no surprise that the home senior care sector has seen significant growth recently 👵 👴 As always, with some winners and losers. Certain franchises expanded especially aggressively over the past 3 years. SYNERGY, Assisting Hands, Seniors Helping Seniors, HomeWell and Nurse Next Door each grew by more than 15% 📈 What about profits? 💰 Here are some quick stats about the home care industry: • Average Investment: $92,000 - $181,000 • Average Yearly Revenue: $916,000 • Average Gross Margin: 46.1% Even though disclosure is limited, it's safe to assume they're profitable. Indeed, all the variable personnel (e.g. nurses), by far the largest expense of these businesses, is already baked into Gross Profit. It's necessary that we acknowledge the privileges we have in India when it comes to healthcare. We can walk in to a clinic/hospital/dental practice for an immediate consultation (even with specialists). The costs are atleast 10x lesser in India, while the wait times are almost 300x in several so-called 'developed' countries. Yes, there are debates around healthcare access and affordability in India. But with my experience being in the UK, I can confirm that the gap in healthcare access and affordability in these countries is way beyond what we perceive it is, and this gap is only widening. A phone call to the GP can take hours to receive a response. And you may be turned away from hospitals if it's a non-emergency situation. In the UK, even a preliminary consultation that facilitates diagnosis is delayed to several weeks or months. Is it ethical to delay treatment? Before questioning delayed treatment, is it ethical to deny even a preliminary consultation? Unduly delayed healthcare is denied healthcare! #delayedtreatment #unethical #nhs

"We are not just failing our elderly, but also the caregivers and the larger workforce." This was one of the many nuggets of wisdom that came out in Thibaut Briere and my conversation with the astute Irene Blackberry, Professor, John Richards Chair and Director of Care Economy Research Institute (podcast upcoming!). Today we have greater #longevity. While this is a major success for humanity, it leads to another problem: caregiver burnout. Those ill-prepared to take care of ailing elderly folk are at risk of burnout, simply because caregiving is like on the job training but without a manual. As a caregiver today for a family member with a life-limiting illness, I feel this viscerally. ❣ If we want quality care, we need proper skills and proper funding. Only that will give positive outcomes. And positive care outcomes is what Thibaut Briere and I have as a #northstar, as we are build Glorious together with our care partners.
