Road Safety Leadership: An Agenda for the UK Annually over 30,000 people are killed or seriously injured on the UK’s roads – the equivalent of a medium-sized UK town suffering a catastrophic burden of injury every year. Countries are encouraged by the United Nations (UN) to accelerate road safety efforts to help reduce road trauma. Unfortunately, the UK has fallen behind global best practice, largely because it has failed to implement the General Safety Regulations which applies to all new vehicles for sale in the EU from 7 July 2024. Join us on 1st July as we discuss the key policy priorities and set out an agenda for road safety action for the next UK government. This event, hosted by PACTS and the Towards Zero Foundation (TZF), is open to all. Panellists include: David Ward, Meera Naran MBE, Richard Cuerden, Jessica T., Will Norman, Jamie Hassall, Dr Ian Greenwood, Steve Gooding, Dr Suzy Charman Register here: https://lnkd.in/ekv7Bsti #transportsafety #roadsafety

🚄🦇 The Great British Bat Scandal 🦇🚄 Only in Britain could a high-speed rail project meant to transform travel somehow also lead to… a £100 million “bat tunnel” 🏰. That’s right – we’ve got ourselves a kilometer-long luxury bat cave, built to protect the rare, elusive Bechstein’s bat from the horrors of modern transport. Now, a few things about this batty situation: The Pricetag 🤑 HS2 was already famous for its budget – but throw in a “bat shed” and we’re £100 million deeper. I mean, for that, you’d think we’d get bats in monocles, at least. HS2 vs. Natural England - The Ultimate Blame Game HS2 claims they were politely nudged by Natural England to build this bat palace. Natural England says, “Er, we just thought it was a good idea.” And somewhere in the background, Sir Jon Thompson’s casually tossing around phrases like “no evidence trains disturb bats.” So…a £100 million guess? British Bureaucracy at Its Finest 8,276 permits to build the railway, and we’re still not sure if bats even care. Someone deserves an award for this level of red tape. And the best part? Residents are left muttering, “Waste of money… but, then again, it’s HS2.” #hs2 #ukinfrastructure #rail #infrastructure

📣📣 We are advising all Local Government leaders, stakeholder groups and concerned members of our WA Community that a national petition is now open to help improve train visibility and rail safety. Together we can end these preventable tragedies within our communities. 🔹In WA in 2020-2021 alone, there were 34 level crossing collisions with vehicles, resulting in four deaths and four critical injuries. 🔹Level crossings represent serious dangers to regional motorists and have for decades claimed many lives and resulted in life altering injuries* We need the Australian Government to collaborate with State/Territories organisations to urgently introduce legislation through the Rail Safety National Law that will improve passive level crossing safety and lighting on trains. Please consider signing and sharing this important petition 💻https://lnkd.in/gUxiWQZ3 We have the power to drive change and to help ensure necessary regulations are in place to improvement train visibility and safety across WA – this is everyone’s business. *Stats provided by Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) Department of Transport, Western Australia

📣 Phone Down. Look Up. Let’s Stay Rail Safe 📱👀🚆 Rail Safety Week is a reminder that, regardless of where we live, it’s important to know how to stay safe on and around rail. This year’s theme highlights the importance of passenger and pedestrian safety, emphasising the need to limit distractions on and around light and heavy rail. UGL is proud to be a founding member of the TrackSAFE Foundation, which supports Rail Safety Week 2024. The TrackSAFE Foundation promotes community awareness and highlights the importance of being safe and acting responsibly on and around freight, passenger, and light rail networks, including areas where roads cross, such as level crossings. At UGL, the health and safety of our work environments – for our people, clients, subcontractors, suppliers, visitors, and wider communities – is paramount to everything we do. https://okt.to/LK6Wqj #unitewiththeverybest #RailSafetyWeek #TrackSAFE

Whenever I read of contracts being awarded to companies for things like construction of viaducts, buildings, bridges, oil rigs etc and there is alleged bribery, I always wonder how safe those structures are. It also begs the question of whether bribes were paid to circumvent safety inspections. There have been many cases in overseas countries of disasters being linked to corruption. Should LTA now review the award of the contract and the construction, and whether corners were cut, especially as they may not know whether there may have been other bribes paid?

This Rail Safety Week, what are you committing to? 🚊🤝 Each year, there are too many fatalities, injuries, and near hits on rail networks, many of which can be avoided. We know that these have a huge and direct impact on those affected, but these events can also cause severe and lasting trauma to rail workers. At Downer, we're committed to making every train journey a safe one. Whether we are designing, building, and maintaining rollingstock or using the network to get home, safety is at our core. This Rail Safety Week, let’s all commit to: 🎧 Listen for trains: avoid distractions and stand behind the yellow line. 🚦 Stay alert: watch for trains at level crossings. 📢 Spread the word: talk about rail safety and the wellbeing of our rail workers. #DownerRail #railsafetyweek #rsw #stayrailsafe #railworkerwellbeing TrackSAFE Foundation, Australasian Railway Association (ARA)
