SLAC will play a key role in DOE’s new research centers for advancing next-generation microelectronics The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced $179 million in funding for three Microelectronics Science Research Centers, with SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory playing a significant role. These centers aim to develop more energy-efficient microelectronics that can operate in extreme environments, addressing growing concerns about unsustainable energy consumption in modern technology. SLAC will lead two projects within the Microelectronics Energy Efficiency Research Center for Advanced Technologies. The first project, ESTEEM, focuses on new manufacturing methods and vertical stacking of devices, taking inspiration from the human brain's energy efficiency. The second project, AUREIS, aims to redesign sensing systems to process data more efficiently at the sensor level. Additionally, SLAC will partner in projects for two other centers: the Extreme Lithography & Materials Innovation Center, as well as Co-design & Heterogeneous Integration for Microelectronics in Extreme Environments. These projects will develop microelectronics for extreme conditions like high radiation and cold temperatures, and work on more energy-efficient chip manufacturing processes. The initiative brings together multiple institutions and industry partners, emphasizing a collaborative "co-design" approach to advance U.S. leadership in microelectronics technology while addressing critical energy efficiency challenges. 💥 PhD Studentships available at University of Warwick's School of Engineering 💥 https://lnkd.in/dvf8ZAm4 Below are the details of two #PhD #studentships with full funding of fees and stipend available to UK/home students (or part funding for non-UK students). Warwick, Cambridge, and Bristol Universities are the UK's foremost research centres for researching, developing, and utilising #SiC, #GaN, and #Ga2O3 power devices. Together, the three Universities won £11.7m of funding from UK research councils EPSRC and Innovate UK to create the REWIRE-IKC "Innovation and Knowledge Centre (IKC)". Co-funded for 5 years (from Apr 2024) with support from over 25 industrial partners, the REWIRE-IKC is intended to unite the capabilities and resources of the three Universities to help commercialise UK-based WBG devices. Across the centre, projects will develop demonstrators, run new fabrication processes and gather data with and for our industrial partners. This Warwick-based PhD studentship is available to work on SiC-related projects within REWIRE, beginning April 2025, October 2025 or January 2026. The PhD topics could include any aspect of SiC power device fabrication, TCAD simulation, or device reliability for power devices rated from 1200-15,000 V. Depending on the applicant and the topic is undertaken, efforts will be made to obtain a co-sponsor from the cohort of REWIRE industrial partners

📢 Meet the FLAGCHIP consortium partners! 📢 Today we introduce you to our partner – The National Institute of Applied Sciences of Lyon (INSA). Lyon has a history in innovation, since many people that left a mark in arts and science come from there, such as André-Marie Ampère! Nowadays, INSA is more than an engineering school; it is a large research hub with 22 centers, one of them being Laboratoire Ampère, our partner in FLAGCHIP. The research group of Laboratoire Ampère is experienced in WBG and UWBG devices characterization, modeling and packaging, as well as in high voltage testing. The role of the group in FLAGCHIP is to propose an innovative power module structure with a focus on the sensor integration in the module. INSA brings in the FLAGCHIP project two affiliated entities: The French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and The Ecole Centrale de Lyon (ECL). CNRS will contribute on the specifications of the power modules, and the relation with the pilot facilities, while ECL will work on the definition of the high voltage tests and development of innovative packaging solutions to increase the operating voltage of power modules.
