🌍 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐏𝐃𝐏𝐂’𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐏𝐇 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐛𝐨𝐧 On November 12, the Pandemic and Disaster Preparedness Center (PDPC) hosted a pre-conference workshop at the 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 in Lisbon. Experts from various countries tackled a simulated Avian Influenza outbreak in the fictional country of 𝘌𝘭𝘥𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢, developing interdisciplinary recommendations for government action. This first international PDPC workshop at EPH Conference highlighted a key lesson learned from past Dutch sessions: practicing interdisciplinary collaboration in simulations is essential for effective crisis response. It builds mutual understanding, values diverse expertise, and strengthens preparedness. How can we be better equipped for future pandemics? EU-funded research project tackles important issues in relation to pandemic preparedness. #Spillover events are rare and there is little data so far. How zoonotic spillover arise and whether it is possible to predict them in time is the subject of the EU-financed PANDASIA Project where a transdisciplinary team of scientists from Europe and Thailand is studying possible risk factors in Southeast Asia. For Leibniz-IZW Alex Greenwood, head of the Department of Wildlife Diseases, states: "It is our goal together with my team to detect new emerging viruses among wildlife and strengthen and develop interdisciplinary networks with ambitious project partners." The main objectives of PANDASIA are to collect social and biological data, model zoonotic spillover rates and study disease occurrence in high-risk areas in Thailand to identify potential pandemic drivers along the nature-rural-urban gradient. With a better understanding of the interactions between the underlying drivers of spillover at local level, this project aims to develop and improve evidence-based strategies for #pandemic preparedness and public health measures. #EUfunded #HorizonEU #OneHealth

🌍 🦟 How is Greece Fighting Vector-Borne Diseases in a Changing Climate? Greece is experiencing many effects from #ClimateChange: 👉 Temperatures have steadily increased and are projected to increase by the end of the century. 👉 Rainfall is generally on the decline, but extreme events, storms and floods are anticipated to increase in frequency and magnitude directly affecting vector borne diseases. In our latest video, we feature interventions in Greece for mosquito surveillance and control. In the Region of Attica we showcase three unique environments: Marathonas, Psatha and the Municipality of Athens, where you will see examples of interventions being implemented on the ground, to manage current risks and futureproof against potential #InfectiousDisease threats. The Benaki Phytopathological Institute, an IDAlert partner, leads this initiative with key governmental and institutional entities. Our recent reports document the monitoring of the mass mortality of the sea urchin species, Diadema setosum that died last summer on the Red Sea coast. Globally, the some species of sea urchin were dying out in different geographical areas due to infection with parasitic pathogens, still implement survey Evaluation to investigate the impact of their absence on the ecosystem. https://lnkd.in/dwx-E-vw

🚨 Spread of the Common Mosquito (Culex pipiens) in Europe 🦟 The Culex pipiens, also known as the common house mosquito, is one of the most widely distributed mosquito species worldwide. It thrives in diverse environments and can be found across Europe, including both rural and urban areas. 🌍 In Europe, this mosquito species is well-established and closely associated with organic pollution, such as stagnant water in sewers and drains. It plays a key role as a bridge vector for diseases like West Nile virus, transmitting pathogens between birds and humans.
