Building Trustworthy Evidence in Challenging Contexts: Lessons from T4C consult Limited South Sudan In the world of international development, credible evidence is our lifeblood. Without it, programmes flounder and resources go to waste. But what happens when we are working in incredibly challenging contexts like South Sudan, where instability and logistics make data collection a difficult task? T4C consult limited have spent years navigating these issues first-hand, and here's what we have learned: Perfection is the enemy of the good. Let's face it: in places like South Sudan, "perfect" data is simply nearly not achievable. Infrastructure is limited, security can be a daily concern, and the very act of collecting data can be a complex undertaking. But that doesn't mean we throw our hands up. Transparency is your North Star. The key to building trust in your evidence lies in being crystal clear about where that evidence came from. For every indicator, you need to lay bare the potential sources of error and how you actively worked to mitigate them. Was your sample limited by access issues? Did interviewers receive rigorous training to minimize bias? The more upfront you are, the more confidence others will have in your conclusions. Context is King. A generic "best practice" from a Western textbook won't cut it in South Sudan. You need to understand the local nuances shaping your data at every turn. That means partnering with local organizations and firm like T4C consult limited who get the context, being aware of power dynamics that could skew responses, and staying flexible when things inevitably don't go according to plan. The goal is not perfection, but reasonable confidence. By being transparent about your methods and the steps you took to maximize quality, you can build a credible case others will trust. It won't be flawless – but with the right strategies, you can generate evidence that genuinely illuminates the way forward for making vital programming decisions. Has anyone else grappled with these challenges in the field? What strategies have you found most helpful in building trustworthy evidence despite the odds. Please let us know in the comment sessions.
