So true! How can be experts in all these different tasks?

And this isn't a new trend either! During my college years, it was drilled into our heads, if you can't master everything, why bother? We are stretched so thin that it's exhausting, devaluing, and soul crushing. Can we have a few expertise that relate to a whole concept, like in using programs like Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign as it relates to graphic design? Yes! Typography, painting, and vector imaging? Yes! Still relates to graphic design. You can only stretch filo dough so thin before it tears.

Graphic Designers aren’t Illustrators. Illustrators aren’t Animators. Animators aren’t 3D Artists. 3D Artists aren’t Motion Designers. Motion Designers aren’t UX/UI Designers. Expecting one person to master all these roles is unrealistic and undervalues each craft. Some of us are versatile, but true creativity requires depth, not an endless list of skills. **RANT POST** It’s becoming increasingly common to see job listings for Senior Graphic Designers that NOT ONLY expect expertise in graphic design but also require skills in animation, video editing, 3D modeling, sound engineering, and more. Employers are asking for mastery of a long list of tools—Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, 3DS Max, and beyond essentially seeking a full creative department under one person’s title. While versatility and continuous learning are important, it’s UNREALISTIC and UNFAIR to expect one person to be an expert across such diverse skill sets, especially at a "senior" level. Each of these fields is a specialized profession in its own right, requiring years of dedicated practice. Adding insult to injury is when these all-in-one roles are underpaid, devaluing not only the experience and expertise required but also the creative industry as a whole. It’s crucial for employers to recognize the value of specialization and to offer compensation that reflects the true scope of the role. Let’s build a creative industry that respects and fairly compensates the diverse talents that drive it forward.

As an employer, hiring a "jack of all trades" might seem like a good deal, but it often leads to lower output. But it takes years of professional experience to truly master creative software, and while creativity comes from within, combining that with deep technical knowledge is challenging if someone only has a surface-level understanding of many tools. If you can be a package deal be my guest. But prioritizing specialists in one field should be seen as the norm, rather than considering it a backlog.

Just wanted to share this great post from Saverio Castelli. Yes, one skill does not equal another, and one should not be expected to excel in a half dozen different things, especially in the professional space. It's not the way real life works. Creative people usually work towards a specific field, or a certain craft they want to pursue; and quite often that one craft can take a lifetime to master on it's own. It's not a natural or reasonable expectation to have one individual be great enough at a multitude of skills to make up for a multitude of people. I know that companies are trying to find ways to save money, but shortchanging your workforce is not going to work out well when nothing gets done properly!

Graphic Designers are not Illustrators. Illustrators are not Animators. Animators are not 3D Artists. 3D Artists are not Motion Graphic Designers. Graphic Designers are not UX/UI Designers. It's not OK to expect one person to do quality work of five. Some of us have been blessed with multiple skillsets and abilities outside of one's expertise, through either career journey or personal growth, but these types of employer expectations should not be the norm, especially when the pay does not match with the experience. Have you noticed the growing trend in job postings for Senior Graphic Designers that require not just design expertise, but also mastery of animation, video editing, 3D modeling, sound design, and more? It’s as though employers are looking for an entire creative department wrapped up in a single role. While staying versatile and continually evolving our skill sets is important, the demand for expertise in such a wide range of tools and fields—Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, 3D software, and beyond—is simply unrealistic. Each of these disciplines takes years of specialized practice to master. It's even more disheartening when these hybrid roles come with compensation that doesn’t reflect the breadth of expertise being demanded, ultimately devaluing the creative industry. We should be encouraging specialization, recognizing the value that each creative discipline brings to the table, and ensuring roles are fairly compensated for the skills required.
