My son just got his first Choose Your Own Adventure book, “What Should Danny Do?”, and he’s really into it. Reading is a collaborative activity for him, which is fine by me…it's quality one-on-one time where we can decompress and lose ourselves in a story. So this book is appealing for some obvious reasons: my son gets to make his own choices, practice decision-making in a safe space, and explore different perspectives and outcomes, keeping the experience fresh and exciting. But here’s what I love…the branches in the narrative give us some natural breaks where we talk about what just happened and what could come next. He’ll come up with sometimes practical, sometimes outrageous, and often hilarious predictions. His imagination takes the story beyond the page, developing his creative and critical thinking skills. Ultimately, the book is a vehicle that helps him tell a unique story—like really, truly, super unique—every time. How can you not love that? A few Netflix shows offer a similarly immersive experience. If you hit pause fast enough, you can help the kids prompt that exploration. At a certain point, they’ll start doing it on their own, unprompted (tho it helps to have a big sister to bounce ideas off of). If you have any favorite CYOA stories, let me know! What do you think makes them great? https://lnkd.in/egTQn6Zi

When someone said to me that a book festival in Leiston https://lnkd.in/eRCYbfGd would never work, I just had to prove them wrong. All it will take is to be different to other literary events, so we'll focus on non-fiction authors. To make it topical, so we'll feature books that explore our changing landscape and environment, and to make it run smoothly so we'll be using Leiston's Edwardian cinema as our venue. We're also going to make it affordable, so £10 per ticket, or £60 for all seven sessions, with each ticket entitling the holder to a £5 discount on that author's latest book if purchased at the event. We want to encourage our audience to read the books they'll have just heard about. The goal is not to make money, other than to fund making the 2025 festival even better, and we hope our visiting authors will challenge our assumptions and prompt us to think a little differently about the world we live in. Of course marketing will also be important, so please do share this post with all you think might be interested. Tickets will go on sale next month, and you can sign up here https://lnkd.in/eRCYbfGd to be told the moment ticket go on sale. #Leiston #books #literary #festival #nonfiction #authors #environment #landscape

If professional news journalism is under serious threat, arts coverage is shrinking to the point of extinction. Which means an indispensable part of the cultural ecosystem is fading away. And that is bad for the future of art and artists. I share Henry James’s belief that “art lives upon discussion, upon experiment, upon curiosity, upon variety of attempt, upon the exchange of views and the comparison of standpoints.” The Arts Fuse provides invaluable information, criticism, and dialogue. The rise of influencers, marketers, algorithms, and AI will only lead to more deadening homogenization. Here is your chance to support flesh and blood critics.
The SPRING APPEAL begins! https://lnkd.in/eBrgtDD4 Please support a small, proudly independent journalism site -- we turn 17 this year -- dedicated to one-of-a kind reviews and in-depth reporting about Boston’s arts and culture scene. We ask for donations twice a year in order to balance our books. If we can’t, this feisty, nonprofit magazine will join the other media outlets that have shut down or cut back, including, recently and locally, NPR Stations WBUR and GBH.
