The start of another year isn’t far off. With it comes a new school semester and possibly new tuition bills. If you’re thinking about helping a grandchild or other student with their college expenses, consider the tax implications. If the amount you give exceeds the annual gift tax exclusion, you might owe gift tax on the excess. In 2024, this exclusion is $18,000 per recipient or $36,000 for married donors who split gifts. In 2025, these figures rise to $19,000 and $38,000 respectively. To avoid tax implications, you can pay tuition directly to the school, which qualifies for an unlimited gift tax exclusion. This exclusion applies only to tuition, not to room, board, books or supplies. #GiftTax #TuitionPayments #TaxPlanning #CollegeExpenses #GrandparentGifts #TaxExclusion #IRSCompliance #EducationSupport #CollegeFunding #GiftTaxExclusion #TaxTips #TaxSavings

My mother had written a postcard to her dear friend in the UK while she was on vacation with me in Vancouver. Innocently, I offered to send it for her, leaving me with a dilemma: where do I buy stamps and where is a post box or post office? I’m 58 years old and for most of my life, this would have been the simplest of tasks, regardless of where in the world I lived. In 2024 this proved to be a challenge. A week later, I found a pharmacy 3,828 steps away from home, which sold stamps and could send the postcard for me; it was likely to arrive to its destination in less than ten days. This led me to ponder on the rapid change to many of our once-held-sacred institutions (such as the postal service) and to consider writing about them for my children and their future children, not to memorialise or glorify the past, but rather to marvel at how far we’ve come and to enjoy the world’s modern advances across so many industries. Who could have imagined that the complex process for sending letters around the world would one day be superseded by much faster and cheaper solutions: first the fax, then email and now text and image messaging? While the media is painting a fatalistic and depressing outlook on the world, let’s pause to celebrate today, to stand in awe of the improvements made in just one lifetime. Let’s paint a picture of the future which is not bleak, but rather one whose technology continues to improve our lives and the planet. #wisdom #gratitude
