EgyptAir's CEO officially announced that the carrier's expansion plan for the next 5 years of which the main highlights are outlined below: i. Expand its fleet from 80 to 125 aircraft between 2025 and 2030 with 20 additional wide bodies + 25 narrow body aircraft each respectively. ii. Streamlining its wide body fleet around the A350 and B787-9 family line only thus ruling out the prospect of a future B777X order which is the right way forward. iii. MS still has options for 6 additional A359s and the airline will gradually phase out its 6 B773s by 2029. iv. New destinations to be launched in 2025 are Zanzibar, Lusaka and Luanda. In my opinion, the 6 options that MS holds for the A359s should be upsized to the A350-1000 as that is a more suitable airplane to replace their 346 seater B773. Routes such as JFK, YYZ, DXB, JED, CAN and LHR can easily sustain the A351 for MS in the long term. It is the correct decision to not look at the B777-9 as the airplane is too expensive and too big for MS plus more importantly, there is no justification to have a 3 type wide body fleet just for 6 units. In a dual class layout, an A351 for MS would seat 40J + 342Y totaling 382 seats i.e. 36 more than their existing B773s because the latter has 3-3-3 in Y cabin. Since it is a long term investment, MS can easily sustain having minimum 8 and maximum 10 A351s in its fleet as p2p + transfer demand is built up rapidly across its CAI hub. One must also note that with the 2034 Football world cup being staged in Saudi Arabia, MS + Cairo airport will be a massive staging post for fans who would want to be based in Egypt and do day trips to JED/RUH/MED/DMM to watch the matches in a similar manner that Flydubai and Dubai catered to such demand during the previous world cup in Qatar. With regards to the narrow body fleet increase, MS should only focus on the A321Neo and B737Max8 for deliveries from 2029 onwards as prior delivery slots are now sold out. There is no real need for the A321Neo-LR in MS's fleet as the standard A321Neo can fly up to 7 hours from CAI which puts Dakar within its range. Lastly, the airline has expressed interest in boosting its freighter fleet and in order to keep costs low and continue on the standardization theme, it should consider purchasing 3 new A350Fs complimented by converting 5 used B738s into freighters to feed the wide body freighters. #a350 #b737 #b777 #b787 #egyptair #cairo #egypt #staralliance #a321
