Over the last two decades, a growing number of states have adopted new laws and mechanisms to address a longstanding gap in national criminal laws: the absence of meaningful procedures to raise post-conviction claims of factual #innocence, including based on newly discovered evidence in #deathpenalty cases. These legal and policy reforms respond to a surge of exonerations worldwide, facilitated by the growth of national innocence movements that are increasingly collaborating across national boundaries. Join us this Friday at lunchtime for an event on the innocence gap in #internationallaw and discuss different strategies for achieving greater recognition of an international right to assert claims of factual innocence. The panel will draw upon the insights from efforts to promote other ‘new’ #humanrights and the experiences of beneficiaries of and participants in domestic advocacy on behalf of individuals who have been wrongfully convicted. In addition, two Europeans who served significant time in prison for crimes they did not commit will share their stories. Learn more and register to attend: https://lnkd.in/eS97Nbjk

Yesterday, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights released the report in response to the Commission's commitment to addressing the deep- seated inequities that persist within our criminal legal system, particularly as they impact underserved communities. The report analyzes federal efforts to assess racial disparities in crime victimization, focusing on how violent crime disproportionately impacts minority communities. The report found that even when victims are aware of services, hurdles like police reporting requirements make them difficult to access, thereby perpetuating cycles of violence and victimization. In communities long neglected and marginalized, there is often a deep-seated distrust of law enforcement," said Rochelle Garza, Chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. "We need a holistic approach to crime prevention and victim services that builds trust in law enforcement and provides culturally sensitive care." As legal professionals, we are constantly seeking ways to improve our justice system and ensure fair outcomes for all parties involved. That's why I am excited to share with you the concept of restorative justice in Europe. Restorative justice is an alternative approach to traditional criminal justice that focuses on repairing harm caused by crime rather than solely punishing the offender. It involves bringing together the victim, offender, and community members to discuss the impact of the crime and find a resolution that addresses everyone's needs. In Europe, restorative justice has been gaining traction as a more effective and humane way of dealing with crime. 🔹 A crucial component of this approach is victim-offender mediation, which has shown promising results in reducing recidivism by facilitating dialogue and mutual understanding. 🔹 Using a comparative analysis of restorative justice models across different European nations reveals diverse strategies and successes. These insights can be used as guiding principles for further improvements and adaptations to justice systems around the world. Restorative justice supports victims and encourages offenders to take responsibility for their actions, leading to healthier communities and safer societies. 🌟 #RestorativeJustice #CriminalJusticeReform #Europe #VictimOffenderMediation #RecidivismReduction #JusticeSystem #CommunityHealing
