Warner Bros. Discovery’s shift to AI-generated captions with Google Cloud could be a game-changer or at least a cost-saver, cutting captioning costs by 50% while automating 80% of the work. Hollywood captioning traditionally costs between $7 and $15 per minute. For a two-hour film, that’s up to $1,800. With AI, the cost drops to $900 - saving $900 per film. Scale this across an estimated 300,000 minutes of content annually, with AI captioning costs ranging from $75,000 to $300,000 versus up to $4.5 million for manual captioning, and the savings become enormous. But for the full picture, we need to consider the additional costs tied to Google Cloud—data processing, storage, compute, and API usage - or is that included in the 50%? Maybe someone from Google Cloud can chime in on that part. Of course, manual oversight will still be necessary to ensure AI-generated captions don’t sacrifice quality for speed.
