As the holidays approach, we often see heartbreaking appeals for donations. In addition to being a powerful tool for organizing collective action and fundraising, social media is used by scammers to purloin your money and information. Here are some tips for protecting yourself: · Do Your Research - Never click on links in social media posts or emails, even if they look official. Charity Navigator and CharityWatch provide information about charities and their practices. · Get inspired, but Stay Wary - Never respond to unsolicited messages from people claiming to be affected by an incident, medical condition or natural disaster. · Beware of Fake Sites - To exploit your generosity, scammers create fake websites. Contact organizations like the American Red Cross and United Way to learn how you can help others. · Avoid Common Tricks - Fraudsters target people of all ages and income levels. Scams that look authentic can catch you off guard, so stay alert and don't fall for them. If you see something suspicious, report it to reportfraud.ftc.gov or ohioprotects.org. Online predators search for victims on the same social and gaming platforms that our young children and teens use. It's our responsibility to know the threats and educate our children properly. #HumanTraffickingAwareness #TechThatProtects #HumanTraffickingPrevention #Nonprofit #Charity #ItEndsHere #Trafficking #HumanTrafficking

I want to share something important. For the past nine months, my primary focus on LinkedIn has been on raising awareness about the genocide happening to the Palestinians and spreading their stories as widely as possible. Unfortunately, I’ve recently become aware that some individuals are exploiting this situation to scam those who genuinely want to help. I’ve received a few direct messages asking for GoFundMe donations, and you might have encountered the same. To ensure your donations reach those who truly need them, here are some steps to verify the authenticity of the person requesting funds: 1. Identity Verification: Ask them to write their full name in Arabic/English with today’s date and take a photo with their family member (husband/kids, etc.). 2. Cross-Reference: Compare this photo with the ones on their GoFundMe page. The last time I followed this process, the person stopped responding, which raised a red flag. One crucial lesson I’ve learned in my 10 years in IT is the importance of ‘Zero Trust’ in security. Stay vigilant and ensure your contributions make a real impact.
